  • Patent number: 5562753
Abstract: Both a method and apparatus for producing molten steel are provided wherein ferrous materials rich in carbonaceous materials are fused in a first vessel of a single electric furnace having separate first and second vessels. The carbonized molten metal thus obtained is then pretreated in a separate pretreatment facility to remove contaminants and the pretreated molten metal is then decarburized in the second vessel of the electric furnace. The decarburization of the pretreated metal in the second vessel of the furnace avoids reintroducing contaminants into the steel by avoiding contact between the pretreated metal and the slag produced when the initial carbonaceous materials are fused. Preferably, the first and second vessels are two vessels of a single electric furnace having a single electric power source.

  • Patent number: 5561837
Abstract: The invention proposes a memory relay system for observation spacecraft, for example observation satellites or interplanetary probes. The object of the invention is to alleviate the absence or possible failure of onboard memory of these craft. The system of the invention provides a substitute solution which returns full functionality to an observation system capable of acquiring and transmitting observation data but not of storing it. In accordance with the invention, an artificial satellite or craft comprising at least one transponder and at least one writable memory is disposed near an observation satellite or a probe. The transponder is capable of receiving signals transmitted by the observation satellite or probe and then transmitting the signals to the Earth or to another destination. The memory of this artificial satellite or craft stores the information received until it is retrieved and retransmitted to the receiving station, a station on the ground, for example.

  • Patent number: 5557660
Abstract: Program-controlled communication system, whereby a call request is simultaneously signaled at a plurality of communication terminal equipment. The call request that is addressed to a specific terminal equipment (KE-D) is simultaneously signaled at at least one further terminal equipment (KE-C). These terminal equipment preferably belong to a group of terminal equipment integrated in the communication system which have key functions. When the call is accepted by a terminal equipment (KE-C), then, after the set up of a connection to the other terminal equipment, a connection can be automatically set up between this terminal equipment and the originally calling terminal equipment (KE-A) by actuating a special key (ST). Simultaneously, the call set up between the two first-cited terminal equipment is cleared down.

  • Patent number: 5551344
Abstract: An overbalance technique propagates a fracture in a formation to stimulate hydrocarbon production from a wellbore. A liquid column in the wellbore is driven into the formation by a gas generator to propagate the fracture. The gas generator can be compressed gas or propellant which is placed within the wellbore near or in the liquid column. Preferably the gas generator is placed in the wellbore above the production zone. The gas generator can be conveyed via tubing, wireline, or coiled tubing. Typically the liquid is brine, water or oil. The liquid can be a resin to consolidate a weak formation, sand and gel to prop a fracture, or acid to etch a fracture face. The overbalance technique has applications to cased and openhole wellbores. In cased wellbores, the technique can be performed as the casing is perforated or after the casing is perforated.
