  • Patent number: 4601536
Abstract: A connection for connecting a submerged optical fiber line cable (1) to a housing (18) for equipment such as a repeater (17), said housing being provided with an optical fiber access cable (16). The line cable comprises an optical core containing optical fibers, an arch of steel wires surrounding the core, a copper tube swaged down over the arch, and an insulating sheath over the copper tube. The end of said line cable is fixed to a connection piece by means of a conical ring and a plug of hardenable resin. The connection includes a magazine (15) for storing excess lengths of said optical fibers, and said access cable is constituted by a tube inside which the optical fibers extend freely.

  • Patent number: 4595256
Abstract: Each cable has an optical fiber core (1, 1') an arch of steel wires (2, 2'), a copper tube (3, 3') swaged onto the cylinder, an insulating sheath (4, 4') a return conductor (14, 14') and another sheath (16, 16') which is a protective sheath. Said connection has, at each cable end, a fixing part (8, 8'), a splaying out wedge (15, 15') and a plug of hardenable resin (11, 11'). The connection also has ports (12) provided in the fixing part (8) and, around the fixing parts, an inner tube (23) provided with ports (21) in which support wires (26) are placed, weld sleeves (28) connecting together the fibers (22, 22') being on said support wires by tapes (27) and slung across said ports, an outer tube (20) covering the inner tube, a sealing mould (31), a conductive metal braid (32) and a heat-shrinkable sleeve (33).

  • Patent number: 4516830
Abstract: A junction for joining the ends of two under water optical fiber cables, each cable comprising an optical core (1, 1') inside a protective arch of helically wound steel wires (2, 2'), with a copper tube (3, 3') swaged down on the arch, and an insulating outer sheath (4, 4') covering the copper tube, then a return conductor (14, 14') of aluminum, and an outer insulating protective covering (16, 16'). The junction comprises two cable-receiving end portions (8, 8') for receiving respective ends of the two cables to be joined, and a central portion (5, 6) for interconnecting said end portions. The end portions provide mechanical connection to their respective cable ends and are themselves mechanically interconnected by an outer metal tube (6). The optical fibers (22) are stripped to leave a considerable amount of slack. They are inserted into the ends of a mandrel (5) and then threaded out through holes near its ends for end to end joining with corresponding fibers in the other cable.

  • Patent number: 4481381
Abstract: A device for preventing damage to a submarine cable at the point where it leaves an equipment casing during passage round the cable drum and over the davit, and consisting of a chocking member (5) on each side of the casing (2) surrounding the cable (1) from its outlet from the casing to a point of contact of the cable with the drum (3), said chocking member being in the form of a body of revolution about the cable axis of generally pear-shaped configuration when unstressed and having a swollen part (6) at the casing end, said chocking member occupying all the space between the cable (1) and the drum (3) when the cable is wound on the drum, the swollen part of the chocking member when unstressed having a radius at least equal to the distance (d) between the cable and the drum at the outlet from the casing. The chocking member may be a sleeve of a strong and flexible material; it may also consist of a stack of elementary chocking members.

  • Patent number: 4412878
Abstract: A method of joining together optical fibre undersea cables. In a first step, a given length of a carrier vault (1, 2) which surrounds the optical-fibre containing core (3, 4) of the cable end is cut off so as to clear a sufficient length of optical fibre (5, 6), a part (9, 10) with at least one opening (11, 12) in which said optical fibre (5, 6) is inserted is placed in each said cable ends between the strands of the carrier vault, the ends of said carrier vaults (1, 2) are brought together and fixed substantially in contact each with another, said optical fibre ends (5, 6) of each of said cables are connected together then the excess length of fibre thus formed is stretched and helically wound around a sleeve (14).
