  • Patent number: 6654538
Abstract: The attenuator for optical fibers with attenuating fiber according to the present invention comprises an optical fiber having a profile of reflective index with partially depressed cladding, of a length equal to the one of the whole attenuator, drugged with chemical substances like ions of transition metals and elements of rare earth, for creating a uniform spectral attenuation in the field of wavelengths between 1260 nm to 1650 nm.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 27, 2002
Date of Patent: November 25, 2003
    Assignee: Optotec S.P.A.
    Inventors: Lucio Duca, Giuseppe Manfredda

  • Patent number: 5742725
Abstract: A fibre optic attenuator (201) with spectral response independent of the incident radiation wavelength is formed by a method comprising a controlled series of compressive stressing and subsequent relaxation, or of relaxation alone, of the core of an optical fibre (30) (which can be of standard type or special type), which is simultaneously softened by local heating produced by a heat source. The application of further heating, in the absence of mechanical stressing of the deformed optical fibre (30), facilitates the attainment of the required attenuation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 16, 1996
Date of Patent: April 21, 1998
    Assignee: Optotec S.p.A.
Inventors: Enzo Longobardi, Lucio Duca, Antonio Menzaghi
