    Abstract: A method is described for setting a disc speed in a disc drive apparatus (3) which is in data transfer communication (7) with a host system (2). According to the invention, after a first speed change, any further speed change is prohibited until a predetermined minimum waiting time has passed since the previous speed change. Specifically, the minimum waiting time between successive speed changes in opposite directions ([speed-up followed by speed-down]; (speed-down followed by speed-up)) is longer than the minimum waiting time between successive speed changes in the same direction ([speed-up followed by speed-up]; {speed-down followed by speed-down}).
