Patent number: 8402325Abstract: A data storage and replay device uses measurements of the evolution of performance of the storage medium (typically a flash memory circuit) to predict an error rate of retrieval from a region of the storage medium. The prediction is used as a basis for dynamically selecting an ECC for encoding the data prior to storage of the data. The ECC is selected from a plurality of available ECC's so that a fastest encodable ECC is selected that is predicted to produce no more than a predetermined post-decoding error rate given the information. On decoding the data, which is typically audio or video data, is decoded and replayed at a predetermined speed. In another embodiment, the data stored using a plurality of ECC's together and an ECC is selected dynamically for decoding, so that an output data rate can be maximized or power consumption on replay can be minimized.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2005Date of Patent: March 19, 2013Assignee: ST-Ericsson SAInventors: Sebastian Egner, Nicolaas Lambert, Ludovicus M. Patent number: 7898999Abstract: Methods for exchanging signals via a network with nodes (11-15) improve the performance of the network by letting a destination node (12) s receive the signals originating from a source node (11) via different first and second signal routes, and by processing and correlating these signals in the destination node (12). In dependence of a correlation result, a process for processing a signal in a node (11-15) is adjusted. This process may be situated in the destination node (12), or in the source node (11) or an io intermediate node (13-15), in which case a control signal is to be exchanged. A learning algorithm for the adjusting of the process can be run in the nodes (11-15). Label switched routing can be introduced, whereby the label signal is sent from the source node (11) to the destination node via a third signal route different from the first and second signal route, to improve the efficiency of the nodes (11-15).Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2005Date of Patent: March 1, 2011Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventors: Sel B. Patent number: 7003453Abstract: A transmission system includes a transmitter with a signal encoder and a codebook entry selector. The signal encoder has an input for a signal to be encoded. The codebook entry selector selects a codebook entry for obtaining a synthetic signal giving a best approximation of a signal representative of the input signal. The codebook entry includes samples that can assume more than two values and is identified with a sequence of symbols. A receiver has a decoder with a codebook for deriving the codebook, where the codebook entries corresponding to sequences of symbols that differ in one particular symbol value also differ in one signal sample value.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 2002Date of Patent: February 21, 2006Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventors: Ludovicus M.G.M. Publication number: 20020099537Abstract: In a transmission system a signal to be transmitted is applied to a source encoder (4) for being encoded. The encoded signal is applied to a channel encoder (6) which applies an error correcting code on the encoded input signal. The output signal of the channel encoder (6) is transmitted to a receiver (14) which processes the received signal by means of a channel decoder (18) and a source decoder (20).Type: ApplicationFiled: January 11, 2002Publication date: July 25, 2002Applicant: U.S. PHILIPS CORPORATIONInventors: Ludovicus M.G.M. Patent number: 6378100Abstract: Multiword information is encoded as based on multibit symbols in relative contiguity with respect to a medium, whilst providing wordwise interleaving and wordwise error protection code facilities. This may provide error locative clues across words of multiword groups, that originate in high protectivity clue words and point to low protectivity target words. The clue words may have a first uniform size and be interspersed in a first uniform manner. The target words may have a second uniform size and be interspersed in a second uniform manner. The organization may be applied for use with optical storage. Sectors may get provisional protectivity as a low-latency error correction mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1998Date of Patent: April 23, 2002Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Marten E. Patent number: 6367049Abstract: Multiword information is based on multibit symbols disposed in relative contiguity with respect to a medium, and is encoded with a wordwise interleaving and wordwise error protection code for providing error locative clues across multiword groups. In particular, the clues originate in high protectivity clue words (BIS) that are interleaved among clue columns, and also in synchronizing columns constituted from synchronizing bit groups. The synchronizing columns are located where the clue columns are relatively scarcer disposed. The clues are directed to low protectivity target words (LDS) that are interleaved in a substantially uniform manner among target columns which form uniform-sized column groups between periodic arrangements of clue columns and synchronizing columns.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1999Date of Patent: April 2, 2002Assignees: U.S. Philips Corp., Sony Corp.Inventors: Marten E. Patent number: 5910961Abstract: A method and apparatus for trackwise burst error correction in multitrack storage has an error protective code format that is based on first and second linear block codes each with a plurality of symbols. Of each word pair that consists of one word from either code, and whose words have a pivot symbol in common, the latter words have mutually different cross-track orientations. Each individual symbol forms the pivot symbol of one such word pair. The method first decodes an error-decodable word pair having such pivot symbol in common. The next word pair is minimally shifted with respect to the latter pivot symbol and is then decoded, such shifting being non-uniform as based on the outcome of a most recent decoding. The method then alternates the shifting and decoding steps.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1997Date of Patent: June 8, 1999Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Ludovicus M.G.M. Patent number: 5896397Abstract: For error-protected storing data, the data is encoded by an error protecting code to encoded data and stored in a medium. Next, the data is read out again and compared with the encoded data. If a particular discrepancy between stored data and encoded data is found, a discrepancy identifier is formed and stored with the stored data for raising the error protection by the error protecting code.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1996Date of Patent: April 20, 1999Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Ludovicus M. Patent number: 5872798Abstract: Data rate and robustness of digital error protection is improved according to the method and device of the present invention to obviate the need for audio interpolation and consequently, to be useful in fields where audio interpolation cannot be done without complex encoding and decoding strategies. Digital information signals are transferred in the form of a plurality of a number of sequences of information symbols. Each information symbol has a uniform bit length and each sequence of information symbols occurs in a respective input channel. Check words are included in transmitted digital information signals and are encoded to allow correction of erroneous symbols caused on transmission.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1995Date of Patent: February 16, 1999Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Constant P.M.J.
