  • Publication number: 20040158328
Abstract: A prosthetic device for insertion into an intervertebral space is provided. The prosthetic device includes a first component having a first recess formed therein, the first recess defining a substantially concave recess surface of the first component, a second component having a second recess formed therein, the second recess defining a substantially planar recess surface, and a projection member adapted to engage the second recess surface wherein the projection member is also adapted to engage the first recess surface to permit articulating motion between the first and second components.

  • Patent number: 6740118
Abstract: An intervertebral prosthetic joint including a first articular component adapted to engage a first vertebra and a second articular component adapted to engage a second vertebra. The articular components include abutting convex and concave articular surfaces that cooperate to permit articulating motion between the articular components. At least one of the convex and concave articular surfaces includes at least one surface depression that is configured to facilitate removal of matter disposed between abutting portions of the articular surfaces. In one embodiment of the prosthetic joint, each of the articular components has a vertebral bearing surface and a flange extending therefrom that is configured to penetrate a corresponding one of the first and second vertebrae, with the flange defining at least one opening extending therethrough to permit bone through-growth.

  • Publication number: 20040059318
Abstract: The present invention provides an instrument and method for surgical extraction. In one example, a surgical instrument for extracting a prosthetic device includes a distal portion transitionable from an insertion configuration to an extraction configuration, wherein the insertion configuration is adapted for displacement along a portion of a prosthetic device, and the extraction configuration is adapted for engaging and extracting the prosthetic device, and a proximal portion connected to the distal portion. In another example, an instrument for surgical extraction includes at least one extraction prong wherein the at least one extraction prong comprises a transverse flange, and a mounting portion wherein the at least one extraction prong is secured to the mounting portion.

  • Publication number: 20030204261
Abstract: An articular disc prosthesis and method of implanting the same within an intervertebral space between adjacent vertebral bodies. The prosthesis includes a pair of articular components and an articular ball disposed therebetween. Each of the articular components includes an outer shell portion and a removable inner insert portion. The insert portion includes a concave articular surface sized and shaped to receive a portion of the articular ball to provide articulating motion between the articular components. The outer shell portion includes a central hemi-cylindrical portion, a pair of laterally extending flanges, and an axially extending lip. Following removal of the natural intervertebral disc, a pair of hemi-cylindrical recesses are formed along a central region of the adjacent vertebral bodies to a predetermined depth.

  • Publication number: 20020123750
Abstract: The present invention relates to orthopedic implants made from a mesh material. The mesh material can be treated in order to promote bone growth, to provide antibiotics, or to provide other beneficial treatment. Specific applications for the implants include, for example, a prosthetic ligament, a tension band, an interbody device, or a fixation device that extends across one or more joints or fractures.

  • Patent number: 6228085
Abstract: An internal bone fixation system for the treatment of bone anomalies, such as thoraco-lumbar spinal instability. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the fixation system includes a plate anatomically contoured to match the profile of lateral aspects common to thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, as well as the anterior profile. The contour of the plate allows for quicker implantation time, a lower profile, and a fit which allows for biomechanical load-sharing which increases the mechanical properties of the construct (i.e., stiffness, strength, and fatigue life). Moreover, the fixation system includes a fastener screw-plate interface which forces proper alignment between fastener screws and the plate, provides “pull-out” resistance and evenly distributes stresses on both the screw and the plate. Ledges are located on the medial surface at either end of the plate. The fixation system also includes set screws which effectively turn the screw construct into a bolt construct.
