  • Publication number: 20240140051
Abstract: Systems and methods are directed to a pull-through winding method, and a manufacturing fixture, or mandrel, that guides the layup of material in the pull-through winding method, for fabrication of a three-dimensional load bearing structure. These systems and methods allow fibers of material of the 3D load bearing structure to be pulled as straight as possible during winding, and maintained as straight as possible during curing, to take full advantage of properties associated with the fiber or filament-based materials used in these structures, including, for example, carbon fiber material. The manufacturing fixture includes a plurality of pull-through slots at end portions thereof, that provide for the pulling of the fiber-based material, and the application and maintenance of tension in the material that maintains the alignment of the fibers as the material is wound, cured and hardened.

  • Patent number: 8029872
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for the formation of a coating on a substrate. The coating is formed by the deposition of a coating forming material onto the substrate in an atomised form via a nozzle, nebulizer or the like. The material is applied and directed to pass through an exciting medium such as a plasma. The exciting medium is generated and formed in a pulsed manner. The coating forming material passes onto the substrate which can be positioned within the exciting medium or externally of the same.

  • Patent number: 7455892
Abstract: A method for forming a coating on a substrate using an atmospheric pressure plasma discharge. The method comprises introducing an atomized liquid and/or solid coating-forming material into an atmospheric pressure plasma discharge and/or an ionized gas stream resulting therefrom, and exposing the substrate to the atomized coating-forming material. The application also described a method for polymerizing a polymer forming material, and further to apparatus for forming a coating on a substrate.

  • Publication number: 20060177598
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for applying and forming a coating on a substrate surface by the application of at least one atomized coating forming material onto the substrate to form the coating. The atomized coating forming material, upon leaving a suitable atomizer which can be an ultrasonic nozzle or nebulizer for example, passes through an exciting medium and, upon leaving the exciting medium, passes to the substrate. The substrate is positioned remotely from the exciting medium.

  • Publication number: 20040146660
Abstract: A method of coating a surface of a low surface energy substrate by exposing the substrate to a silicon containing compound in liquid or gaseous form selected from a chlorine terminated polydimethylsiloxane, direct process residue, ZxSiR54−x, SinY2n+2 or a mixture thereof, where each Z is a chloro or alkoxy group and each R5 is an alkyl group or substituted alkyl group, x is 1 to 4, n is from 2 to 10 and each Y may be selected from a chloro, fluoro, alkoxy or alkyl group but at least two Y groups must be chloro, or alkoxy groups or a mixture thereof and forming a grafted coating layer on the substrate surface and subsequently post-treating the grafted coating layer by oxidation or, reduction, which is preferably utilising a plasma or corona treatment, in particular atmospheric pressure glow discharge or dielectric barrier discharge.
