Patent number: 7047941Abstract: A fuel injection system for supplying pressurized fuel to a fuel injector, the fuel injection system comprising an accumulator volume for supplying fuel at a first injectable pressure level to the fuel injector through a fuel supply passage, a pump arrangement for increasing the pressure of fuel supplied to the injector to a second injectable pressure level, and a valve arrangement operable between a first position in which fuel at the first injectable pressure level is supplied to the injector and a second position in which communication between the injector and the accumulator volume is broken so as to permit fuel at the second injectable pressure to be supplied to the injector. The injection system may include a valve arrangement in the form of a three-position valve or may include a shut off valve for controlling the supply of fuel through the fuel supply passage.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2003Date of Patent: May 23, 2006Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: David E. Draper, Anthony T. Harcombe, Andrew R. Knight, Lukhbir S. Panesar

Patent number: 6843053Abstract: A fuel system for use in an internal combustion engine comprising a fuel pump having a pumping cycle during which fuel is pressurised to a high level within a pumping chamber for delivery to an injector. The injector is arranged to provide a primary fuel injection event, and a secondary fuel injection event within the same pumping cycle. The injector includes a valve needle which is engageable with a valve needle seating to control fuel delivery and an injection control valve arrangement for controlling movement of the valve needle so as to control the primary and secondary fuel injection events. The fuel system further comprises an accumulator volume for storing high pressure fuel for delivering the secondary fuel injection quantity, and additional valve arrangement for controlling the supply of fuel stored within the accumulator volume to the injector for the secondary injection event.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2003Date of Patent: January 18, 2005Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: David E. Draper, Anthony T. Harcombe, Andrew R. Knight, David J. C. Law, Lukhbir S. Panesar

Patent number: 5172887Abstract: A fluid control valve includes a valve member movable into engagement with a seating to prevent the flow of fluid through the valve, and an actuating member which is biased in one direction by a return spring and is moved against the action of the return spring by the armature of the actuator when the winding thereof is energized. The movement of the actuating element is transmitted to the valve member through an under travel spring which yields to allow continued movement of the actuating element when the valve member engages the seating.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1991Date of Patent: December 22, 1992Assignee: Lucas Industries Public Limited CompanyInventors: Robert K. Cross, Ronald Phillips, Lukhbir S. Panesar

Patent number: 4917065Abstract: A pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine has a high pressure pump, an adjustable throttle member which is utilized to control the fuel flow from a low pressure to the high pressure pump. An electromagnetic actuator is utilized to adjust the setting of the throttle member and a hydraulic damping device is provided to damp the movement of the throttle member.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1989Date of Patent: April 17, 1990Assignee: Lucas Industries Public Limited CompanyInventors: David J. C. Law, Lukhbir S. Panesar

Patent number: 4877005Abstract: A fuel injection pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to an engine includes a high pressure pump which receives fuel from a low pressure pump by way of an angularly adjustable throttle member. The throttle member is connected to the armature of an electromagnetic actuator by means of a connecting rod. A transducer is provided which includes a core carried by the connecting rod intermediate the ends thereof and a pair of springs act to oppose the movement of the rod and throttle member by the actuator.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1989Date of Patent: October 31, 1989Assignee: Lucas Industries Public Limited CompanyInventors: David J. Patent number: 4873959Abstract: A fuel pumping apparatus comprises a body housing a high pressure fuel pump to which fuel is supplied by an angularly adjustable throttle member from a low pressure pump. The throttle member mounts an arm and a hollow housing is provided which is secured to the body. A support carries an electromagnetic actuator the armature of which is connected at one end to a connecting rod the other end of which is connected to the arm. A transducer is mounted about and movable with the connecting rod. A clamp adjustably clamps the support within the housing and the clamp can be released to enable for a given axial setting of the connecting rod, the output of the apparatus to be adjusted.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1989Date of Patent: October 17, 1989Assignee: Lucas Industries Public Limited CompanyInventors: David J.
