Abstract: A spectacle lens edge grinding machine includes a machine frame and at least one grinding wheel connected to the machine frame. A rotatable spectacle lens holding shaft is fastened to the machine frame. The spectacle lens holding shaft is at least radially displaceable relative to the grinding wheel. A spectacle lens is secured to the spectacle lens holding shaft for grinding with the grinding wheel. At least one abutment is provided for contacting a spectacle lens having been ground to have a desired spectacle lens contour. A transducer for measuring at least one actual value of the spectacle lens contour relative to the at least one abutment is provided. A computer for controlling the spectacle lens edge grinding machine is provided, wherein the computer includes a memory in which nominal values of the spectacle lens contour are stored. The computer compares the at least one actual value to the nominal values in order to determine a deviation from the nominal values.

  • Patent number: 5538459
Abstract: A process for measuring forward and rearward three-dimensional curves and the thickness at the circumference of a contour-ground eyeglass lens by means of a computer-controlled eyeglass lens edge grinding machine. As the corrective lens is being ground, the rotation of the corrective lens is interrupted when a measurement point is reached, and the corrective lens is shifted axially relative to the grinding disk away from the center section and toward the edges of the grinding disk until the forward and rearward edges at the circumference of the corrective lens touch the tracing device. The path or the time consumed in moving from the center section to the point of contact with the tracing device is recorded, and the measured values are stored in the computer, the shaft halves holding the corrective lens rotate further, until the next measurement point is reached, when a measurement is again taken.

  • Patent number: 5454194
Abstract: System for grinding eyeglass lenses with at least one grinding disk, a rotatable holder for an eyeglass lens blank, a device to control the grinding process in accordance with pre-determined optical values and/or a predeterminable outline of a glass lens, a CNC controlled manipulator to insert an eyeglass lens blank in the holder in an exact position, and an input device for the decentration values for the predetermined outline in reference to the optical center of the eyeglass lens. The utilization of the manipulator eliminates the difficult and time-consuming centering of the eyeglass lens blank by hand so that a plurality of eyeglass lens grinding machines can be loaded by a single manipulator.

  • Patent number: 5454748
Abstract: A process, a block or sucker, and an apparatus for machining the edge and optionally the optical surfaces of eyeglass lenses. The block or sucker is of circular shape and has a diameter which, at least in some areas, extends beyond the dimensions of the finished outline of the eyeglass lens. The block or sucker is attached to one major surface of the eyeglass lens blank during the machining operation. The block or sucker is inserted in a holder of a device for machining the edge of the eyeglass lens blank. The edge of the eyeglass lens is machined in accordance with the prescribed outline. The block or sucker may be machined at least in certain areas down to the outline of the eyeglass lens itself, whereafter the block of sucker is detached from the completely machined eyeglass lens and disposed of. Prior to edging the eyeglass blank, the optical surface may also be machined using the same block or sucker.

  • Patent number: 5410843
Abstract: An improved process for finishing the edge of corrective lenses made of thermoplastic material or of a mixture of thermoplastic and thermosetting plastic materials. This process includes the steps of dry pre-profiling and dry post-profiling the corrective lens and the further subsequent additional process step of wet final finishing and/or calibrating the corrective lens by using an additional fine grinding wheel and applying cooling liquid to the contact area between said corrective lens and said fine grinding wheel.

  • Patent number: 5007977
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying a strip to the planar contour-prepared edge of a lens. The beginning of an endless strip is connected to the edge of a lens. A transverse perforation is introduced into the strip at a distance from the strip beginning that corresponds to the circumference of the lens. The lens is then rotated, and the strip is restrained, at a location thereof behind the perforation when viewed in the direction of movement of the strip, in such a way that the strip tears at the perforation to form a new strip beginning for the next lens. This new strip beginning is pressed against, and connected to, the edge of the next lens. A register is provided for determining the circumference of a lens.

  • Patent number: 4766699
Abstract: An apparatus for grinding the edges of lenses. A lens shaft is mounted on a frame, and a motor driven grinding wheel is provided that can be moved against a lens as well as parallel to the lens shaft. A chamber is mounted on the frame and accommodates a lens and the grinding wheel. A chamber has an observation window and walls, including oppositely disposed side walls that extend essentially perpendicular to the lens shaft, with these walls enclosing, and being spaced slightly from, the grinding wheel and the lens. The chamber has a width, i.e. the distance between the side walls, that is approximately equal to the thickness of the grinding wheel plus the axial displacement stroke of the latter. A wheel shaft that extends through one of the side walls of a chamber has two ends, one of which is disposed in the chamber and carries the grinding wheel, while the other end extends beyond the one side wall.
