  • Patent number: 7706109
Abstract: A slider includes a Tunneling Magneto-Resistive (TuMR) read sensor and a shunt resistor connected in parallel. The shunt resistor may be located in a read structure of the slider. The shunt resistor may reduce a total resistance of the read structure and any corresponding impedance mismatch between the read structure, a transmission line, and a preamplifier. The shunt resistor may be made of a material having a near zero thermal coefficient of resistivity (TCR) to test a quality of the TuMR read sensor. The TuMR read sensor may be deemed defective if its TCR deviates from a population average by a specific criterion. The TuMR read sensor may include a MgO tunneling barrier to improve signal strength. The TuMR read sensor may include a free layer that is able to be saturated with a perpendicular background field to calculate a more accurate TCR of the TuMR read sensor.

  • Patent number: 7639458
Abstract: A system, method and computer program product provide an annealing process for setting a magnetization condition of a read head. An amount of heat for stabilizing magnetization condition of a read head is calculated. A width and amplitude of a voltage pulse that generates the calculated amount of heat in the read head are calculated. A voltage pulse of the calculated width and amplitude is applied to the read head for generating Joule heating in the read head. The width of the voltage pulse is less than one second.

  • Patent number: 7474510
Abstract: A disk drive includes a magnet (152) for resetting a corresponding head (138). The magnet (152) is located on or close to a load/unload ramp (140?) that is used to park the head (138), such that the magnet (152) is spaced from its corresponding parked head (138) by distance of no more than about 1 millimeter when the head (138) is parked. The magnet (152) may be either a permanent magnet or an electromagnetic which induces a magnetic field upon the head (138) to reset its magnetization.

  • Patent number: 7042674
Abstract: The invention is generally directed to a disk drive head resetting system. The system has a slider with a disk drive head associated therewith. The disk drive head may be on the slider and affixed thereto. A heater is also associated with a slider and spaced apart from the disk drive head. A controller is communicatively coupled to the heater and to the head to transfer a first control signal to the heater and a second control signal to the disk drive head at substantially the same time. The first control signal may be used to generate heat past a blocking temperature of the head to substantially free a magnetic orientation of the head. While the first control signal is being transferred to the heater, a second control signal is transferred to the disk drive head to align a magnetic orientation of the head to a desired magnetic orientation.

  • Patent number: 6999265
Abstract: A method and system control the flight height of a transducer element of a slider mechanism operating in association with a storage disk. The invention adjusts the flight height of transducer element to a first flight height using an electromechanical control mechanism. The flight height of transducer element then achieves a second flight height using a thermal control mechanism. The thermal control mechanism is associated with a thermally responsive portion of transducer element. By heating the thermally responsive portion, a portion of transducer element becomes sufficiently proximate to the storage disk for the transducer element to respond to physical forces arising from electrostatic induction between transducer element and the storage disk. Flight height adjustment of transducer element from the second flight height to a third flight height may then occur using an electrostatic control mechanism which generates a physical force through electrostatic induction.

  • Patent number: 6664783
Abstract: A system for measuring the magnetostriction coefficient &lgr; of a sample material applied to a substrate element fixed at one end leaving the other end free to be deflected. An external rotating magnetic field of rotation frequency f and intensity Hext is applied to the cantilever substrate element the amplitude Am of the deflection of the free end is measured at each of a plurality of rotation frequency harmonics {fm} by, for example, using a plurality of lock-in amplifiers. The harmonic deflection amplitudes {Am} are combined to determine the magnetostriction coefficient &lgr; of the sample material. At an Hext equal to the sample saturation moment Msat and assuming a 15 Oe sample anisotropy Hk and coupling bias Hp, the error in the saturation magnetostriction coefficient &lgr;S measured according to this invention may be reduced by 80% to 90% over the error seen when using only the second harmonic deflection amplitudes A2.
