  • Patent number: 8814130
Abstract: A self-regulating valve controls the flow of high pressure gas discharging from a gas cylinder in a fire suppression system in response to a detection of a fire within a protected space by a two-step process which reduces the pressure rise within the protected space upon release of the fire suppression gas into the protected space.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 29, 2008
Date of Patent: August 26, 2014
Assignee: UTC Fire & Security Corporation
Inventors: Muhidin A. Lelic, Fanping Sun, Zaffir A. Chaudhry, Tony George, Lyle H. Hamilton, Robert G. Dunster, Rob J. Lade, Paul C. Upton, Mark Williamson

  • Patent number: 6468477
Abstract: An air sampling device for obtaining an air sample from a person's lungs, and a method for using the same. The air sampling device is comprised of generally of a breath intake structure, an expandable bag structure, an adhesive patch, and a removable adhesive patch cover. Optionally an adhesive inlet seal patch also seals either the expandable bag inlet or an outer shell. The outer shell is provided to capture the air sample should the expandable bag structure fail. A person breathes into the breath intake, the device directing a first predetermined volume of breath into the expandable bag structure, and the remainder of breath also into the expandable bag, the remainder of the breath expelling the first predetermined volume of waste air from the expandable bag structure. The breath intake structure and removable adhesive patch cover are removed and the adhesive patch seals the interior surfaces of the expandable bag structure.

  • Patent number: 5520167
Abstract: A mask adaptor ring for connecting a medication inhaler having an extended cylindrical breathing tube to masks with attachment connections of child and adult size, the mask adaptor comprising a compound annular ring with a central opening, the central opening having an inlet end and an outlet end, the inlet end having an inside diameter slightly larger than the outer diameter of a child mask attachment, the outside diameter of the outlet end having a diameter slightly smaller than inner diameter of the adult mask attachment, and the inlet end having an outside diameter slightly smaller than the outlet end opening of the extended breathing tube. A skirting is provided for size adaptability to outlet end openings of various cylindrical breathing tubes. The invention also has a center flange disposed between its inlet end and its outlet end, the flange having a diameter larger than the outer diameter of the adult mask attachment and of the outlet end opening of the extended breathing tube.

  • Patent number: 5026027
Abstract: A selector valve is disclosed for a breath sampling apparatus which comprises a pair of plate-like members that have a connection with one another for relative edgewise swinging about an axis. Each of the plate-like members has an outer surface and an inner surface which is flat and normal to the axis and which slidably opposes the inner surface of the other member. Each of the plate-like members has a port through it, the ports in the two members being spaced at like distances from said axis. A stop is provided on said members defining a first position wherein the ports are in register with one another, and a second position wherein the ports are spaced apart and wherein the port in said one plate-like member is blocked by the other plate-like member with the port in the other plate-like member open to atmosphere. A biasing spring is provided to bias the plate-like members to one of the positions. A spring bias force selector is provided to adjustably vary the force of the biasing spring.

  • Patent number: 4947861
Abstract: A patient to be treated for the presence of Campylobacter pylori in the stomach and/or duodenum ingests a quantity of urea and after about 10 minutes exhales into breath collection apparatus to provide a breath sample of alveolar air, collected during the last part of the exhalation. Immediately upon issuing from the patient the expired breath is passed in contact with a preferably solid-state body of alkaline hygroscopic material, e.g. sodium hydroxide, that substantially removes water vapor from the breath but is inert to ammonia in the presence of water. The breath sample, thus dehydrated, is delivered to a sensor which signals the presence of ammonia in it, to indicate presence of C. pylori in the stomach.
