  • Publication number: 20080058810
Abstract: A bone plating system is provided that permits maintenance of a compression force while also accommodating bony subsidence, among other features. Methods of implantation are also provided that improve alignment and placement during implantation and avoid maneuvers that weaken the vertebral bodies. A modular distraction screw is placed during the initial stages of surgery when all relevant landmarks are still intact. After completion of the surgical bone work, a proximal end of the distraction screw is detached, leaving a protruding distal segment implanted in the centerline of the vertebral bodies above and below the newly fused disc space. A bone plate is guided into proper position relative to the upper and lower vertebra by attaching the bone plate to the protruding distal segments. The distal segments of the distraction screws are tightened onto the plate and the plate is held stationary while bone screws are placed.

  • Publication number: 20070167948
Abstract: Within a given spinal segment, the stable vertebral level is identified. Within the lower lumbar spine, that level is most commonly at the sacrum. A bone fastener is rigidly affixed to the stable spinal segment and an interconnecting member is rigidly affixed to the bone fastener so as to form a cantilever construct. Vertebral bodies that exhibit aberrant spinal motion and/or mal-alignment relative to the stable segment are then attached to the interconnecting member using non-rigid bone fastener(s). The motion profile of the dynamic fastener can be varied and may be selected to provide the desired vertebral motion characteristics.

  • Publication number: 20070106383
Abstract: Disclosed are devices and methods for the placement of a bone fusion implant between vertebral bodies in a human or animal subject. In an exemplary method a pathway is formed in the first sacral vertebrae along a trajectory that has a starting point between the inferior aspect of the facet joint and the first posterior sacral foramen and transverses at least one pedicle, at least a portion of the first sacral vertebra and the disc space immediately superior to the sacrum. A fusion implant is placed into the formed pathway. Additional bone fasteners and inter-connecting rods are added to the fusion implant in order to further strengthen the construct. Embodiments that can be used to fuse an additional level are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20070093829
Abstract: Disclosed are devices and methods for the re-construction of the vertebral lamina after partial or complete laminectomy. Pursuant to an exemplary method, a first bone fastener is anchored to a vertebral bone. A second bone fastener is anchored to the same vertebral bone, wherein the first and second fasteners are located on opposite sides of the vertebral midline. A connector member is used to inter-connect the two bone fasteners and produce a prosthetic lamina. Multiple embodiments of the lamina prosthesis are illustrated. These devices reconstruct the spinal canal, mark the position of the nerves at re-operation and provide a stable platform for the placement of additional spinal stabilization implants.
