    Abstract: An abrader device for delivering a substance into skin via an abrasion process includes a housing adapted to be pressed against the skin at a desired delivery site, an applicator head disposed in an upper opening of the housing and movable across a lower opening of the housing to abrade the delivery site in at least one furrow, and an abrader surface attached to the applicator head whereby the housing remains firm and stationary at the delivery site and structure of the housing and the applicator head controls parameters of the abrasion process. In particular, the amount of force or pressure applied to the abrader surface, the speed at which the abrader surface moves across the skin and the number of lateral passes of the abrader surface across the skin are controlled so that the abrader device provides a furrow with a length of substantially the same depth thereby providing reproducible results, even though different technicians are applying the abrader device against a patient's skin.

    Abstract: An apparatus for delivering or withdrawing a fluid through at least one layer of the skin is provided. A device includes a body having a top face, a bottom face, a side edge and at least one channel. The bottom face includes a first surface area and a second surface area adjacent to and recessed at a first distance from the first surface area. The bottom face further includes at least one raised protrusion disposed on the second surface area. The protrusion has a height from the first surface greater than the first distance. At least one dermal-access member is provided in the protrusion and is in fluid communication with the channel to deliver or withdraw the fluid. The dermal-access member extends at least 1 mm from the protrusion. A mechanism drives the device against the skin at a calculated speed of about 6 m/s to about 18 m/s.

The process involves (a) heating of a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer to above its melting transition temperature; (b) passing said molten polymer through an extrusion chamber equipped with an extrusion capillary having a multilobal cross-section to form a multilobal filament; and (c) winding the filament at a suitable draw-down. The filaments so formed are of at least 50 denier per filament (dpf) and feature essentially uniform molecular orientation across their cross-section. In a final optional step, the filaments are heat treated in stages to form filaments exhibiting excellent tensile properties.

The process involves: (a) heating of a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer to above its melting transition temperature; (b) passing said molten polymer through an extrusion chamber equipped with an extrusion capillary of an aspect ratio of greater than about 1 and less than about 15 to form a filament; (c) winding the filament on to a bobbin at a low tension and draw-down ratio of at least about 4; and (d) heat treating the filament directly on the bobbin at suitable temperature and pressure conditions for a sufficient period of time. The filaments so formed are of at least 50 denier per filament (dpf) and feature essentially uniform molecular orientation across the cross-section.

    Abstract: The invention is directed to LCP monofilaments and yarn made therefrom which have improved adhesion properties, said monofilaments, and yarn made therefrom, comprising a liquid crystalline polymer filament having a finish selected from the group consisting of esters formed between (a) pentaerythritol and saturated polyols of up to 10 carbon atoms and 2 to 6 hydroxyl groups, and (b) a carboxylic acid of formula C.sub.x H.sub.2x=1 COOH, wherein x is from 2 to 20, and wherein 2 to 6 of the hydroxy functions are converted to ester functions. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the finish is an ester formed from the reaction of pentaerythritol and a carboxylic acid of formula C.sub.x H.sub.2x=1 COOH, wherein x is from 2 to 20, and preferably between 14 and 20. The most preferred esters are pentaerythritol tetrapelargonate and pentaerythritol tetraisostearate.

    Abstract: This invention discloses a thermally expandable composition for use in actuators. The composition contains about 10-50 volume percent hollow glass spheres in a wax or a polymer. The spheres contain a conducting coating affixed thereon. During use in an actuator, the composition is heated to melt the wax or polymer, when the density of the spheres substantially match the density of the melt, thereby substantially eliminating phase separation. The high thermal conductivity of the composition increases the speed of heat transfer out of the composition during the cooling cycles.

    Abstract: A process for making a transparent film comprising a liquid crystalline polymer, and a transparent film made thereby having high barrier properties. In this process, the LCP is dissolved in an appropriate solvent, then cast into a film at ambient or near-ambient temperatures. The film optionally may be dried at elevated temperatures and/or reduced pressures to remove the solvent. The film is then annealed at a temperature between the glass transition temperature (T.sub.g) and the melting point temperature (T.sub.m) of the polymer. The result is a highly transparent film having liquid crystalline morphology and high barrier properties.

    Abstract: A process for enhancing the thermo-oxidation stability of a polybenzimidazole-containing article wherein the article contains from about 5 to about 100 weight percent of polybenzimidazole and from about 0 to about 95 weight percent of a thermoplastic polymer, by the steps of providing a phosphoric acid solution of about 2.0 to about 10.0 weight percent of acid; contacting the polybenzimidazole-containing article with the acid solution for sufficient time to produce an acid-treated article; drying the acid-treated article at a low temperature to remove excess acid; and heat treating the dried article at a temperature ranging from about 400.degree. to about 500.degree. C. in an inert atmosphere to form a phosphate barrier layer on the surface of the article, wherein the article retains at least about 50 percent of its weight after isothermal aging at about 600.degree. F. for a period of at least about 300 hours.
