    Abstract: A system for early detection and treatment of sepsis, comprising a fluid transfer device having an inlet and an outlet. The inlet is configured to receive a flow of bodily fluid. A flow-based assay device is configured to be coupled to the fluid transfer device. A portion of the flow-based assay device engages the outlet to allow a portion of a first volume of the bodily fluid to be transferred to the flow-based assay device. The flow-based assay device is configured to detect at least one sepsis-associated biomarker. Processing circuitry is configured to receive data from the flow-based assay device, apply a computational model to the received data, generate a sepsis probability score based on an output of the applied computational model, and when the sepsis probability score exceeds a sepsis-associated threshold, alert a care provider to initiate corresponding treatment.

    Abstract: A method of fishing that employs a fishing loop as the terminal tackle article that holds bait and interoperates with fish attractants. The fishing loop opens a gap urged by pressure between a gradual bend top and a loop closing extension to receive bait and allow fish flesh to pass. The gap closes after pressure is released holding the bait or engaged fish. The fishing loop has an elongated lever eye for securing fishing line. The lever eye also serves to help the loop stay closed under pressure from swimming fish. The fishing loop can be shaped from a single section of wire or rod; or, the loop closing extension can be a separate flexible material when rigidity in the fish engaging portion is desired. The fishing loop can be used with natural or penetrable artificial bait.

The individual's biomarker profile and the reference biomarker profile comprise a plurality of ions each having a mass-to-charge ratio of about 100 Daltons to about 1000 Daltons. The plurality of ions can be detected by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry in positive mode. The comparison uses a decision rule, such as a classification tree, that determines the status of sepsis in the individual without requiring knowledge of the identity of the biomarkers in the biomarker profile from the individual and without requiring knowledge of the identity of the biomarkers in the reference biomarker profile.
