  • Patent number: 8771355
Abstract: A mobile device is adapted to at least partially replace the motion characteristics of a natural inter-vertebral disc positioned in a disc space. In an embodiment, a receptacle is coupled to the bearing surface. The receptacle is adapted to accept an implantable material without the removal of the bearing surface, wherein the implantable material contacts the abutment surface of each of the vertebral bodies adjacent to the disc space and leads to fusion and immobilization of two vertebral bodies adjacent the disc space.

  • Publication number: 20100069929
Abstract: A barrier is placed across a portion of or across the totality of a spinal implant. The barrier can serve a variety of purposes, including, for example: (1) to keep tissue away from the implant and minimize or eliminate the likelihood of tissue adhesion with the spine or implant; (2) to decrease or eliminate the likelihood of tissue growth, migration, invasion and/or interaction with the implant; (3) to decrease or eliminate the likelihood of the dissemination of implant wear debris and particles away from the implant and into body cavities; and (4) to decrease or eliminate the likelihood of calcification, ossification, and/or bone formation adjacent to the implant.

  • Publication number: 20090171394
Abstract: An orthopedic implant is adapted to be implanted within a vertebral facet joint and adapted to maintain motion between adjacent vertebral bodies. An embodiment of the implant includes first segment that rigidly attaches to a facet joint surface of a first vertebra, wherein the first segment contains a cavity that houses a bone forming material which forms a bony fusion with the first vertebra. The implant also includes a second segment having an abutment surface with a facet joint surface of a second vertebra, wherein the second segment does not rigidly attach to the second vertebra.

  • Publication number: 20080281359
Abstract: An orthopedic device is adapted to fixate the spinous processes of vertebral bones. The device includes at least one bone engagement member. When implanted, a bone engagement member is located on each side of a spinous process and adapted to forcibly abut the side of each spinous process.

  • Publication number: 20080281358
Abstract: In a spinal implant device, a frictionless pivot member is used to interconnect multiple links and produce a scissor jack-like device with minimal frictional wear characteristics. The device is attached to at least two vertebrae, wherein a first device segment is attached to a first vertebra and at least one additional device segment is attached to at least one additional vertebra. The implanted device functions to control and dampen the movement between the attached vertebral bodies.

  • Publication number: 20080045963
Abstract: The distal bone screw segment of a bone screw system is driven into bone. In a first state, the assembly permits relative motion between its component parts in order to facilitate the placement and correct alignment of an interconnecting rod that is used to couple multiple bone screw systems and/or other orthopedic devices. In a second state, the assembly provides relative immobilization between the assembly components and the inter-connecting rod.

  • Publication number: 20080027438
Abstract: Multiple implants and methods for the minimally invasive treatment of spinal stenosis are disclosed. A spinal implant device includes a spacer region and an attachment region. The spacer region is adapted to be positioned between first and second spinous processes of first and second vertebral bodies to limit movement of the first spinous process and the second spinous process toward one another. The attachment region attaches to the first spinous process via a fastener that extends substantially along a long axis of the spinous process.

  • Publication number: 20070173842
Abstract: Devices and methods are adapted for the distraction of a disc space that is situated between a first vertebral body attached to a previously implanted bone fixator and a second vertebral bone that is not attached to the bone fixator. A distraction member is attached onto the previously implanted fixator while the fixator remains attached to the first vertebral body such that the fixator is not removed from the first vertebral body.

  • Publication number: 20070173831
Abstract: An instrument is adapted for placing a cross-member between a pair of bone screws. The instrument includes an actuator and a housing that contains the cross-member in a pre-deployed state such that the cross-member is at least partially enclosed within the housing. A mechanism couples the actuator to the cross-member. Actuation of the actuator causes the mechanism to rotate the cross-member out of the housing and to further translate the cross-member in a direction toward engagement with a bone screw.

  • Publication number: 20070123884
Abstract: A bone plate system is adapted to be attached to bone. The system includes a base plate having at least one aperture for location adjacent to a bone member and a bone screw sized to be inserted through the aperture such that the bone screw sits within a seat of the aperture for engaging the bone member. A retainer member is adapted to transition between a deployed state wherein the retainer member at least partially blocks the aperture for retaining the bone screw in the seat, and an undeployed state wherein the bone screw permits the bone screw to be inserted into the aperture. The retainer member automatically transitions to the undeployed state as the bone screw is inserted into the aperture and automatically transitions to the deployed state once the bone screw is seated within the seat.
