Abstract: In the rain forest region of Karnataka State, India, a scandent herb Justicia known as “medicine plant” is widely consumed by the local population by incorporating its extract into desserts. This is especially common in the months of June through August because of the belief that the medicinal properties reach their peak during this season. This plant is now considered to be distributed exclusively in this region of the South Indian rain forest. The plant extract lowers cellular cholesterol and cholesteryl ester concentration. Further studies also showed a novel inhibitory effect on the uptake of ox-LDL by human macrophage cell line.

Abstract: A disintegration machine comprises a casing (1) and at least one element (6, 7, 8) rotatable arranged in the casing for disintegration of material. The casing comprises at least one wall portion (11) extending along the rotatable element. This wall portion is at least partially formed by a device (27) movably arranged in relation to the rest of the casing (1). This device is movable between a first position, in which the device is located in a normal operational position relative to the rotatable element, and a second position, in which the device is moved away from the rotatable element.

Abstract: A method of preparing a composition capable of inhibiting platelet aggregation in mammalian blood induced by adenosine diphosphate or arachidonic acid, which comprises forming an aqueous extract of dried and powdered seeds of the plant Paullinia cupana (guarana), centrifuging the solution and filtering the supernatant. A fraction of this aqueous extract obtained by thin-layer chromatographic fractionation on silica gel plates, which is free of salicylic acid, xanthines and nicotinic acid, is capable of deaggregating platelet aggregations in mammalian blood induced by adenosine diphosphate or arachidonic acid as well as inhibiting platelet aggregation. This fraction is eluted with ethanol, and centrifuged to removed gel. The supernatant may be dried and reconstituted with distilled water.
