  • Publication number: 20060074744
Abstract: In the method of creating a personalized content item, a first descriptor (2) describing a content item (1,100) is compared (6) with a second descriptor (4) describing a personal media item (3,64) and the personal media item (3,64) is incorporated (8) into the content item (1,100) if a relation exists between the first (2) and the second descriptor (4). The electronic device for creating a personalized content item contains a receiver (22), an interface (24), and a control unit (28). The receiver is able to receive a signal comprising a content item described by a first descriptor. The control unit (28) is able to use the interface to retrieve a personal media item described by a second descriptor from a storage means and to execute the method of the invention.

  • Publication number: 20060075293
Abstract: Automated computer backup to a DVD. A DVD backup disc contains a backup program that executes upon insertion of the DVD in a computer. The DVD is preconfigured with a computer program having computer executable instructions for determining data to be stored. The DVD also contains instructions for transferring the data to the back-up disc; and instructions for identifying the data transferred to the backup disc. A method of archiving data in a computer to a high-density optical backup disc is therefore provided by reading an executable command from a back-up disc, determining data to store to the back-up disc responsive to the command, transferring the data to the backup disc, and identifying the data transferred to the backup disc.

  • Publication number: 20060041731
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for managing memory space of a persistent-memory device and to a memory management device. The memory management method of the invention comprises a step of allocating (S14) at least one first part of said memory space to a file system (74) upon request from said file system (74) or from an application (70). The method and the device of the present invention enable a dynamical allocation of persistent-memory space to a file system. This way, the memory space of a persistent memory is effectively used also for write-caching. At the same time, write-caching and storing steps can be accelerated.

  • Publication number: 20060026127
Abstract: Increasing capacity of storage media allows larger databases. This calls for efficient classification methods to enhance retrieval of data objects like pictures and films. Pictures may carry metadata related to date, time and location of creation. This helps retrieval, but combined queries hamper fast search and retrieval because lots of metadata have to be checked. The invention proposes a method of classifying the data objects by associating the data objects with classification parameters. Each classification parameter is associated with a data object when values of one or more metadata parameters fall within a certain range. Advantageous embodiments provide possibilities for automatic classification by extracting criteria for classification from the database itself. This is done by checking similarity between data objects having equal values for the classification parameter. Similarity is based on the values of the metadata related to, for example, creation of the data object.

  • Publication number: 20050278758
Abstract: The invention relates to an ad-hoc peer to peer network for providing recommendations. User terminals (100, 103) of the data network comprise a local database (115) with community reference information. A processor (111) determines if a communication with a second user terminal (103) is possible and if so, communication is established by a direct wireless link. Community preference information is exchanged between the two user terminals (100,103) and the database (115) is updated accordingly by a database controller (113). The user terminal (100) also comprises a recommendation processor (117) which generates a recommendation based on the community preference information. The invention is particular applicable to small low cost terminals, such as mobile phones or wireless equipped Personal Digital Assistants.

  • Publication number: 20050273515
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for outputting a media content item, the apparatus comprising a receiver (10) arranged to receive a first media content item, and output means (120) arranged to output said first item to a user. The apparatus comprises selection means (130) for user-operably inputting a command to replace said first item at a particular moment of outputting said first item, time-estimating means (140) arranged to estimate, upon inputting said command, a period of time necessary for outputting a remaining part of said first item, and search means (150) arranged to search for at least one second media content item, wherein a duration of said at least one second item is substantially equal to said period of time. The invention also relates to a method of outputting the media content item.

  • Publication number: 20050249023
Abstract: A device for receiving messages like a combination of an alarm clock and an answering machine has a message receiving unit (11), a recording and playback unit (17), a clock (12), and controls an attention signal. The device has a do-not-disturb mode, an alarm mode, and times can be selected for the do-not-disturb mode and/or the alarm mode. In the do-not-disturb mode, messages are recorded and the attention signal is suppressed. The device has a response unit (20) for providing an override function for the remote sender for overriding a mode set by the user.

  • Publication number: 20050120140
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of and to a system (1000) for dealing with network congestion. A first internet-working device (100) may have several paths available (110; 120) for accessing a second device (400) through a network (AN1; AN2). The first device may e.g. have a low-bandwidth connection that is always operational and/or a high-bandwidth connection which is only operational when the device in its docking station. The basic concept of the invention is embodied in a splitter/merger device (130) that proxies a connection (1), such as a TCP-connection, splits the connection (1) into multiple separate connections (2, 3) which are available, and routes packets (140) over these multiple connections to an external splitter/merger component (200). The splitter/merger device (130; 134; 142; 144; 152) divides the packets over the available connections in dependence of the progress of transport along each of these connections (2, 3).

  • Publication number: 20050103187
Abstract: The invention relates to a music retrieval system comprising input means (210) for inputting user data (310) representative of music, memory means (220) for storing pieces of music, retrieval means (230) for retrieving a desired piece of music (330) in accordance with the user input data (310) upon finding a match between a particular one of the pieces of music stored in the memory means (220) and the user input data (310), and output means (250) for reproducing at least a fraction of the retrieved piece of music. According to the invention, the system further comprises output control means (240) determining, from the user input data (310), a current position (360) within the retrieved piece of music (330), said output control means being adapted to cause a start (370) of the fraction (380) of the retrieved piece of music to substantially coincide with said position (360). The invention also relates to a method of retrieving music suitable for implementing the disclosed music retrieval system.
