  • Patent number: 4809624
Abstract: A method for starting up a partial combustion process, using a burner, wherein finely divided carbon-containing fuel is supplied to a reactor or gasifier and an oxygen-containing gas is supplied separately from the said fuel to the reactor or gasifier and is mixed with the said fuel adjacent the outlet of the burner in the reactor or gasifier. During a predetermined period a low rank particulate carbon-containing fuel is supplied to the reactor prior to the start of the partial combustion process, said low rank fuel spontaneously reacting with oxygen when brought into contact with the said oxygen-containing gas and subsequently switching the burner to a less reactive finedly divided carbon-containing fuel.

  • Patent number: 4458607
Abstract: A process and burner for the partial combustion of a finely divided solid fuel with oxygen.A core of oxygen-containing gas and an annulus of finely divided solid fuel surrounding said core are introduced into a reactor space via a burner. The solid fuel is centrally introduced into the burner, whereas oxygen-containing gas is separately introduced into the burner outside the central solid fuel. In the burner the solid fuel is caused to flow outwardly and the oxygen-containing gas is caused to flow inwardly for supplying the solid fuel as an annulus around the oxygen-containing gas into the reactor space.

  • Patent number: 4172708
Abstract: A process and apparatus, wherein as hot gas from a coal gasifier discharges through a tubular outlet having therein a wall which is permeable throughout its length for the flow of hot gas centrally therethrough, a gas shield is formed along the inner surface of the tubular outlet by passing a coolant through the wall, which gas shield cools the wall and prevents sticky ash particles in the hot gas from hitting the wall. The gas shield also cools the hot gas so that the sticky ash particles lose their stickiness.

  • Patent number: 4054424
Abstract: A process is disclosed for quenching of the partial combustion product gas of a slagging coal gasifier containing suspended molten slag particles wherein the hot product gas of the gasifier is passed through a tubular quench zone into which a shielding gas is introduced circumferentially to form an annular layer or protective gas shield between the product gas and the walls of the quench zone and a cooling gas is injected radially to effect direct cooling of the product gas to a temperature at which the molten slag particles solidify and lose their stickiness, said protective gas shield being maintained for a sufficient distance along the axis of the quench zone to prevent contact between the quench zone walls and the hot product gas during said cooling.
