  • Patent number: 4683937
Abstract: A process for casting ingot molds wherein a smooth, rigidized insulative board is used to form the as cast bottom surface of the ingot mold to produce a smooth flat surface which does not require machining and to permit slow cooling and solidification so that a uniform macrostructure and microstructure is effected.

  • Patent number: 4473983
Abstract: Anchor organization for a layer of refractory material deposited on a refractory furnace lining. The organization includes a number of non-metallic refractory anchors disposed at spaced locations about the furnace lining surface. The anchors are provided with a particular configuration that includes a concave locking surface on each end providing a refractory-retention function. Each anchor has one end cemented into a hole in the lining and the other end immersed in the cementitious refractory material that is deposited on the surface of the furnace lining. A plunger tool is also disclosed for use in inserting the anchor and cement into a hole in the lining.

  • Patent number: 4428730
Abstract: An improved insulation is provided for furnace members, particularly verticals, cross supports and skid pipes in slab reheating furnaces. The insulation includes a metal spring-clip having outward projections on which refractory tiles are formed. An intermediate layer is provided between the outer surface of the clip and the tiles so as to reduce friction and prevent cohesion between the clip and tiles. Thus, when the clip is spread for installation on the pipes, the tiles will not break.

  • Patent number: 3935060
Abstract: An insulative material comprises a random network of ceramic fibers and a binder for holding the fibers together. In addition, it may include a filler material composed of hollow ceramic spheres which locate at the interstices of the fibrous network and increase the strength of the network. The insulative material can withstand extremely high temperatures and thermal shock without degradation, has an extremely low density, has excellent insulating properties, and has reasonably high compressive strength. The material is formed by making a slurry which contains the ceramic fibers, with or without the filler, and the binder; felting the slurry; subjecting the felt so formed to microwave energy for drying; and firing the dried felt at 2300.degree.-3200.degree.F. to increase its strength.
