  • Patent number: 10501095
Abstract: A power system for a locomotive includes a dynamic brake (DB) grid, at least one chopper circuit, and a controller. The locomotive includes at least one traction motor to power one or more loads during a braking of the locomotive. The DB grid includes at least one resistor bank and is configured to dissipate at least a portion of the power generated by the traction motor. The chopper circuit includes a three-phase inverter module, and selectively disables an electrical communication between the resistor bank and the traction motor. The controller is coupled to the chopper circuit and the loads. The controller determines a magnitude of the loads, and controls the chopper circuit to disable an electrical communication between the resistor bank and the traction motor for a predetermined duration to control a portion of the power dissipated by the DB grid to meet the magnitude of the loads.

  • Publication number: 20170267108
Abstract: A power system for a locomotive. The power system includes an alternator, a first inverter system, a traction motor, a second inverter system and an auxiliary power unit. The first inverter system is coupled to the alternator and receives high voltage power from the alternator. The traction motor is coupled to the first inverter system receives high voltage power from the first inverter system. The second inverter system is also coupled to the alternator. The second inverter system steps down the high voltage power from the alternator. The auxiliary power unit is coupled to the second inverter system and receives the stepped down voltage power from the second inverter system.

  • Publication number: 20160194009
Abstract: The disclosure an integrated traction system for a locomotive. The system includes a primary electrical energy source, a traction load circuit, an auxiliary load circuit, a common DC link, s secondary electrical energy, and a controller. The electrical energy generated by the primary electrical energy source is shared between the traction load circuit and the auxiliary load circuit during a power mode through the common DC link. Further, the electrical energy form the secondary electrical energy source is supplied to the primary electrically energy source during cranking mode. The controller controls the switching of the integrated traction system between the two modes.
