    Abstract: A wireless communication device configured to provide an omnidirectional transmission mode and a directional transmission mode, the wireless communication device comprising: a processor configured to: determine an orientation of a part of a body of a user of the wireless communication device; determine a scanning region of a transceiver of the wireless communication device based on the determined orientation; instruct the transceiver to operate in the directional transmission mode to scan the scanning region; and detect one or more other wireless communication devices based on the scanning of the scanning region.

    Abstract: Devices with radiating antennas are subject to various regulations designed to limit the absorption of radiofrequency energy in a human body part in close proximity to a radiating antenna. Various conventional strategies are available for management of transmissions to comply with these regulations; however, each of these conventional strategies has drawbacks, such as a negative effect on the wireless link. Various strategies are disclosed herein to comply with the requisite regulations while maintaining the wireless link. In addition, strategies are presented to select wireless link rates, taking into account limitations that may be in place to satisfy the necessary regulations.

    Abstract: A kickstand for ergonomically positioning a computer device is equipped with an integrated antenna. In embodiments, the kickstand stores into a recess on a computer device, and can be deployed to help place the computer device into an ergonomic position. A switch or other sensor in the computer device may detect when the kickstand is deployed, and switch a radio within the computer device from an internal antenna to the antenna integrated into the kickstand.
