  • Publication number: 20170251391
Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to methods and apparatus for adaptive antenna switching for measurements, for example, in high gain automotive devices. According to certain aspects, a method is provided herein for wireless communications. The method generally includes selecting, based on one or more conditions, a first measurement configuration that uses at least an external antenna mounted on a surface of a vehicle for one or more measurements or a second measurement configuration that uses at least an internal antenna associated with the vehicle for the one or more measurements; performing the one or more measurements using the selected measurement configuration; and sending a report based on the one or more measurements. The techniques for measurement configuration selection may allow the device to achieve the benefits of both the high gain external antenna and the lower gain internal antenna(s) depending on the current conditions.

  • Publication number: 20170126288
Abstract: An apparatus for selective usage of antennas for measurement purposes is provided. When the signal strength of the primary antenna is less than a signal strength threshold or the signal quality of the primary antenna is less than a signal quality threshold, the apparatus may determine at least one of whether a first difference between the signal strength of the primary antenna and the diversity antenna satisfies a first criteria or whether a second difference between the signal quality of the primary antenna and the diversity antenna satisfies a second criteria. When at least one of the first difference satisfies the first criteria or the second difference satisfies the second criteria, the apparatus may calculate the signal strength and signal quality of the diversity antenna for measurement evaluations and path-loss calculation based on the signal strength and signal quality of the primary antenna.

  • Publication number: 20170070904
Abstract: A multi-antenna device configured for addressing connection performance issues in UL/DL imbalance scenarios is described. The device may identify a potential UL/DL imbalance scenario and select signal measurements associated with either a primary antenna or a diversity antenna for mobility procedures and/or mobility measurement reporting based on the detected imbalance. In one example, the device may receive a signal at both the primary and a diversity antenna and may identify an imbalance between the primary and diversity signal measurements. The device may then compare the identified imbalance with an imbalance threshold and may select the primary or diversity signal measurement for mobility procedures and/or measurement reporting based at least in part on the comparison. For instance, if the imbalance is greater than the imbalance threshold the device may use the primary signal measurements and may otherwise use the stronger of the primary or diversity signal measurements.

  • Publication number: 20160373995
Abstract: Wireless communication is disclosed using a wireless communication device, such as a user equipment (UE) having a high-gain antenna. In a cell that uses at least one of reference signal received power (RSRP)-based cell selection or RSRP-based cell reselection, the wireless communication device may determine an offset RSRP by applying an offset to a measured RSRP if a signal quality of communications from a serving base station of the cell fails to satisfy a signal quality threshold. The UE may initiate at least one of a cell selection or cell reselection operation based on the offset RSRP.

  • Publication number: 20160150450
Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are described for wireless communication. A user equipment (UE) located at a public land mobile network PLMN border area may modify cell selection parameters in order to leave a current PLMN for a more favorable visitor PLMN (VPLMN). The UE may, for example, identify the border area by monitoring GPS coordinates, identifying a mobile country code (MCC) of a network, searching for a background PLMN after experiencing a number of transmit failures, or by detecting a high block error rate (BLER). Additionally or alternatively, the UE may have certain physical or environmental constraints that create an asymmetry in uplink/downlink conditions, and this asymmetry may be a basis for, or may be accounted for, in modifying cell selection parameters.

  • Publication number: 20160127055
Abstract: Certain aspects of the claimed invention generally relate to a network dynamically configuring one or more cells based on signal quality measurements received from all antennas of a receiver-limited UE. The receiver-limited UE may have a number of receivers that is less than or equal to a number of antennas of the UE. Further, the UE may be capable of operating in a CA mode. Dynamically configuring the one or more cells based, at least in part, on the received signal quality measurements may allow the UE to operate on M×N MIMO on the Pcell or Scell.

Abstract: A method for cell reselection by a wireless communication device is described. The method includes signal strength of cells in one or more inter-radio access technology (inter-RAT) frequencies while camped on a serving cell in a connected mode. On releasing the connected mode and before moving to idle mode on the serving cell, the method also includes prioritizing the cells in the one or more inter-RAT frequencies based on a RAT preference order and the signal strength. • Publication number: 20150341938
Abstract: A user equipment (UE) may have data in a buffer for uplink (UL) transmission. The UE may transmit a buffer status report (BSR) indicating the amount of data. The BSR may fail or a base station may not grant sufficient resources for transmission of the data. A BSR failure condition may be based on a radio link control (RLC) operating mode of the data. For example, the data may be an acknowledgement (ACK) for an acknowledged mode (AM) DL transmission. In this case, the UE may initiate a BSR retransmission (Retx-BSR) timer and determine whether any duplicate transmissions have been received. The data may also be associated with an unacknowledged mode (UM), and the BSR failure condition may include waiting for a time interval that is less than the Retx-BSR time interval. When the BSR failure condition is satisfied, the UE may transmit a scheduling request to the base station.

  • Publication number: 20140199952
Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are described for thermal management of a wireless communication device. The described techniques may be used, for example, to monitor an operating temperature of the device to determine if the operating temperature has exceeded a threshold value. Other aspects may provide for monitoring of a PA temperature, a transmission power level, and/or input from one or more additional sensors associated with the wireless communication device. Based on any of the above inputs, alone or in combination, an operating temperature of the wireless communication device may be determined When the temperature exceeds the threshold value, a transmission antenna can be switched from a first antenna to a second antenna. Additional aspects may provide for reduction of the transmission power level in response to the operating temperature exceeding the predetermined threshold value.

  • Publication number: 20140140247
Abstract: A method, an apparatus, and a computer program product for wireless communication are provided. The apparatus ensures that emergency calls may be reliably carried on packet-switched data networks in mobility applications. In one configuration, a time-to-trigger (TTT) parameter, corresponding to a time by which a user equipment (UE) delays transmission of a measurement report, may be reduced when an emergency voice call is provided on a packet-switched data network. In another configuration, when an emergency voice call is to be handed-off, uplink power level to be used for transmissions on an uplink random access channel may be increased above a power level calculated based on estimated downlink path loss. In another configuration, one or more of a semi-persistent scheduling rate of a bearer and a maximum radio link control threshold may be modified when the emergency voice call is established.
