  • Patent number: 6668626
Abstract: A system and a method for measuring and determining flatness of a strip (1) of rolled material. Said system is comprising a measuring roll (2) having a cylindrical central structure (41) having a number of measuring devices for force/pressure registration. Said devices is generating measurement output signals (Upi) depending on the contact between the strip and the measuring roll (2), wherein said measurement output signal (Upi) comprises a force component signal (UFi). Said system also comprises a Flatness Determination Unit (56), said unit being arranged for calculating the flatness (&Dgr;&sgr;1) of the strip based exclusively on signals derived from measurement output signal (Upi) values generated by said measuring devices and information about the values of the width and thickness of the strip (1). The system is continuously determining the Wrap Angle (&agr;) from at least one measurement output signal (Upi) and automatically compensating for a changing Wrap Angle (&agr;).

  • Patent number: 6494249
Abstract: A method and a device for continuous or semi-continuous casting of metal. A primary flow (P) of hot metallic melt supplied into a mold is acted upon by at least one static or periodically low-frequency magnetic field to brake and split the primary flow and form a controlled secondary flow pattern in the non-solidified parts of the cast strand. The magnetic flux density of the magnetic field is controlled based on casting conditions. The secondary flow (M, U, C1, C2, c3, c4, G1, G2, g3, g4, O1, O2, o3, o4) in the mold is monitored throughout the casting and upon detection of a change in the flow, information on the detected change monitored flow is fed into a control unit (44) where the change is evaluated and the magnetic flux density is regulated based on this evaluation to maintain or adjust the controlled secondary flow.

  • Patent number: 6332493
Abstract: A chill mold for the simultaneous casting of two parallel strands and a magnetic brake which generates at least one static or periodic low frequency magnetic field. The chill mold includes a rectangular casting mold and an inner partition which subdivides the rectangular casting mold into two sub-molds, and the magnetic field acts with essentially the same magnetic field direction across the entire width of the rectangular casting mold and has an essentially symmetrical distribution in both sub-molds. The brake includes a first magnet at a first long side of the rectangular casting mold and a second magnet of opposite polarity at the opposite second long side of the rectangular casting mold. The magnetic material in the first and second magnets is distributed such that both magnets have two magnetic sub-poles of the same polarity arranged adjacent to each other along each of the two long-sides of the rectangular casting mold.

  • Patent number: 6253832
Abstract: A device, for continuously or semicontinuously casting of metal in a casting mould, for braking and splitting up a primary flow of hot melt supplied to a casting mould, and controlling the flow of melt in the non-solidified portions of a cast strand which is formed in the casting mould. The device comprises a plurality of water box beams which support and cool the casting mould and supply a coolant to the casting mould, and a magnetic brake. The magnetic brake is adapted to generate at least one static or periodic low-frequency magnetic field to act in the path of the inflowing melt and comprises at least one magnet to generate the magnetic field, at least one core to transmit the magnetic field to the casting mould and a cast strand, and at least one magnetic return path to close the magnetic circuit. The water box beam is completely or partially arranged in a magnetically conducting material.

  • Patent number: 5740855
Abstract: A device for slowing down the non-solidified portions of a cast strand during continuous casting of billets or blooms. The device comprises a group of at least three separate molds (1-4) which are open in the direction of casting and which are arranged such that each one is supplied with a flow of melt. The device also comprises a number of magnetic core parts (5-8), and at least one magnetic-field generating member (9-13), adapted to generate and transfer, together with the magnetic core parts, a static magnetic field or a periodic low-frequency magnetic field to the inflowing melt in such a way that the movement of the melt is slowed down. The magnetic core parts and the magnetic-field generating members are arranged such that, together with all the molds in the group, they form a common closed magnetic circuit. All the molds included in the group are arranged in series with each other in the closed magnetic circuit.

  • Patent number: 5664619
Abstract: A device for continuously manufacturing a cast strand by continuous casting of liquid metal melt wherein the flow of the liquid metal in the non-solidified portions of the strand is controlled by means of a static or periodic low-frequency magnetic field. A mould adapted to be supplied with the melt includes copper plates (2a,2b) which form a casting mould space with a rectangular cross section, water box beams (3) which are arranged outside the copper plates to support and cool them, and a member (4) holding the mould together. Magnetic field-generating devices, i.e., magnets, are provided close to the mould to generate a static or periodic low-frequency magnetic field which acts in the path of the inflowing melt and divides the primary flow as well as checks any secondary flows arising. Each magnet comprises a front core (5), a rear core and a coil (7).
