    Abstract: Drilling tool systems including a drilling body and a drilling inserts are disclosed. The drilling inserts include four indexable cutting edges. The four cutting edges may each comprise a plurality of cutting edge segments. The plurality of cutting edge segments are provided at distinct angles with respect to a reference plane of the drilling insert to provide effective chip breaking and a stronger cutting edge at the drilling insert corners. Furthermore, the side surfaces of the drilling inserts allow the drilling insert to be more stably supported in a pocket of the drilling body. The drilling inserts may be used in a central pocket of a drilling body.

A cutting lip may extend rearwardly from the cutting edges with a seating surface under the cutting lip. The transition between the seating surface and the cutting lip may include two chamfers separated by a lip support.

One aspect of the invention is that the top surface (12) includes a protruding portion (50) having a backwall (50a) and a segmented portion (52) extending radially outwardly with respect to the protruding portion (50) for effective chip breaking. Another aspect of the invention is that a rake surface (48) has a positive rake angle (RA) that varies along a first cutting edge section (22) of the cutting edge (20) to lower cutting force.
