  • Patent number: 8749966
Abstract: A data storage drive carrier configured for insertion into 2U or 3U slots not an electrocal chassis. The carrier has opposing side members and front and back members. A first side member is fixedly attached to the front member to form a rigid L-shaped portion of the carrier; and a second side member and the back member are pivotally attached to the L-shaped portion. The second one of side members and the back member are pivotally attached to the L-shaped portion at first ends and second ends thereof are attached to together to form a closed frame after receiving therein the drive. A light pipe is disposed within a groove formed in one of the side members, one end of the pipe being disposed adjacent to a light source of a rearward interposer to receive optical signal emitted by the source and an opposite end disposed adjacent a front end of the carrier.

  • Patent number: 7254016
Abstract: A data storage system having an interconnect, storage devices coupled to a first side of the interconnect, and a processing subsystem coupled to a second side of the interconnect that is substantially opposite the first side. The method involves a user (e.g., a customer) receiving a fault signal from the data storage system (e.g., an email notification, a GUI message, an LED pattern, etc.), identifying a component of the data storage system as faulty in response to receiving the fault signal, and replacing the identified component with a new component. In general, the user replaces the identified component in a hot-swapping manner when the identified component is a storage device or a power supply. Additionally, the user replaces the identified component in a powered-down manner when the identified component is a portion of a storage processing circuit (e.g., an internal fan, a memory circuit, a storage processing circuit, etc.).

  • Patent number: 7236361
Abstract: Described is a fan assembly constructed to enable fans to be installed and removed from a storage enclosure individually or collectively. The fan assembly has a plurality of fan packs and a support frame that includes a plurality of wells for holding fan packs. Each fan pack includes a fan and a fan mount attached to the fan, and each fan pack is disposed in one of the plurality of wells. A first latch-and-release mechanism secures one of the fan packs to the side walls of the well within which that fan pack is disposed. The first latch-and release mechanism enables that fan pack to be removed individually from the fan assembly. A second latch-and release mechanism secures the support frame to opposing side walls of an enclosure. The second latch-and-release mechanism enables the fan assembly to be removed from the enclosure while populated with the plurality of fan packs.

  • Patent number: 7145776
Abstract: Described is a midplane-less data storage enclosure having a control board module with an electrical connector and a bulkhead assembly with a plurality of spaced-apart disk-drive guides coupled to a bulkhead. The disk-drive guides and bulkhead together define a plurality of disk-drive slots. The bulkhead has connected thereto a plurality of first electrical connectors and a second electrical connector in electrical communication with each of the first electrical connectors. Each slot slidably receives a storage disk drive such that the storage disk drive electrically connects to one of the first electrical connectors. The second electrical connector is electrically connected to the connector of the control board module so that each storage disk drive connected to one of the first electrical connectors is in electrical communication with the control board module.

  • Patent number: 7068500
Abstract: Disclosed are ways of providing a highly flexible high availability storage system. Disk drive carriers for insertion into enclosures in a storage system include several disk drives. The enclosures accept carriers that include drives of different sizes, and drives compatible with different storage technologies, for instance Fibre Channel, SATA, or SAS. Drives oriented in their carriers in a manner that allows them to be connected to a common medium via identical flex circuits that are configured based on the orientation of the drives. Redundant controllers include redundant serial buses for transferring management information to the carriers. The carriers include a controller for monitoring the multiple serial buses and producing storage technology specific management commands for the disk drives.

  • Patent number: 7004764
Abstract: Described is a retainer having a base for attaching to a first circuit board. Opposing spatially separated first and second support members extend from one side of the base. The first support member has a latch portion and a terrace for supporting a portion of a second circuit board thereon. An arm has a free first end with a projection extending therefrom and a second end pivotally attached to the second support member for rotational movement between an open position and a closed position. An intermediate section of the arm latches onto the latch portion when the arm is rotated into the closed position. The free first end of the arm extends beyond the first support member for pressing the projection against a surface of the second circuit board when the intermediate section of the arm is latched onto the latch portion.

  • Patent number: 6850410
Abstract: Described is an Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) disk drive module for use in a data storage system having an enclosure with slots constructed to receive Fibre Channel disk drive modules. The ATA disk drive module comprises an ATA disk drive, an adapter board connected to the ATA disk drive, and a carrier assembly including spaced apart carrier sleds mounted to the ATA disk drive and to the adapter board. The spaced apart carrier sleds have mechanical dimensions that enable the carrier assembly to slide into an enclosure slot constructed to receive a Fibre Channel disk drive module. The adapter board provides an electrical interface and a mechanical interface between the ATA disk drive and a midplane of the enclosure when the carrier assembly is inserted in the enclosure slot and the ATA disk drive module is plugged into the midplane.

  • Patent number: 6181552
Abstract: A computer assembly comprises a base frame which is generally U-shaped in cross-section and a box-shaped primary unit console which is fixedly mounted on the base frame. The secondary unit comprises a secondary unit console which is slidably mounted on the base frame of the primary unit about a pair of ball bearing slides. A plurality of power supplies are slidably disposed within the primary unit console, each power supply comprising a housing, power supply electronics disposed within the housing and a handle assembly pivotally mounted on the housing. A power switch assembly is mounted on the base frame of the primary unit and comprises a T-shaped metal pawl coupled to a power knob. In use, the metal pawl can be rotated by the power knob between a first position in which the metal pawl electrically and mechanically engages a locking block formed on the secondary unit console and a second position in which the metal pawl electrically and mechanically disengages from the locking block.
