  • Publication number: 20140204736
Abstract: If a wireless device does not know how many data contexts can be supported, then the wireless device might attempt to establish more data contexts than are supported. Such attempt would normally be rejected. However, the signalling involved in the attempt to establish another data context and the rejection of that attempt is considered wasteful. Embodiments of the present disclosure allow such waste to be reduced or avoided by signalling to the wireless device when the maximum number of data contexts is reached or when it is about to be reached. Such signalling can occur before any attempt to establish more data contexts than are supported. Thus, wasteful signaling involved with attempting to establish more data contexts can be avoided.

  • Patent number: 8744442
Abstract: An apparatus, and an associated methodology, for identifying to a circuit-switch-connected mobile station with an indication of packet-service capabilities available to a mobile station. A message generator at the network generates a message that includes an indication of the network-entity capabilities with respect to packet communications. A field of the message identifies the packet-service capabilities. A message is sent by the network and detected by a detector of the mobile station. A report is formed indicative of the value contained in the delivered message, and a user display displays an indication of the detected information.

  • Patent number: 8514754
Abstract: In one illustrative example, a mobile communication device receives, via a generic access network (GAN) from a GAN controller, a message having a discontinuous transmission (DTX) indication. For a voice communication session, the mobile device causes a connection to be established with the GANC, via the GAN and over a wireless communication link with a wireless access point of the GAN, for the communication of voice data of the voice session which is provided via a core network of a mobile telecommunications network. In response to identifying that the DTX indication indicates that the DTX functions are instructed or supported by the GANC, the mobile device causes DTX functions to be performed for the communication of the voice data of the voice session over the wireless link.

  • Patent number: 8509782
Abstract: Methods and apparatus to manage mobile handover are disclosed. An example mobile station includes hardware and software stored on a tangible computer readable medium that, during operation, cause the mobile station to receive from a network controller a response to a network registration request, wherein the response includes an indicator to indicate a type of cell that may be reported by the mobile station during a handover procedure and send a handover message indicating cells permitted by the indicator.

  • Patent number: 8509779
Abstract: Methods are described for use in a mobile device such that when the mobile device is connected to a generic access network (GAN) cell, the mobile device receives information including characteristics pertaining to one or more neighbor cells in a network that are not GAN cells. The mobile device can then determine at least a list of candidate neighbor cells for handover from the GAN cell to a cell that is not a GAN cell as a function of the information. In some embodiments of the invention the network that is not a GAN is a UTRAN network and a candidate list of 3G cells are generated.

  • Patent number: 8483655
Abstract: Techniques for use in producing an incoming call message for a mobile-terminated call to a mobile communication device which operates in a wireless communication network are described. When the mobile-terminated call is a non-emergency call, data indications in one or more data fields of the incoming call message are set to instruct the mobile communication device to perform non-emergency call processing. When the mobile-terminated call is an emergency call from a public safety answering point entity, the data indications in the one or more data fields of the incoming call message are set to instruct the mobile communication device to automatically answer the emergency call.
