  • Publication number: 20130070098
Abstract: The vehicle surroundings monitoring apparatus is provided with an imaging device and a device that transforms captured image to digital image. A first edge extraction mask is applied to detect multiple horizontal edges. The apparatus further includes a detector that detects upper end of the head of the object by detecting a horizontal edge having a highest edge intensity out of the multiple horizontal edges. A second edge extraction mask is used to detect the lower end of the head of the physical object by detecting multiple vertical edges and matching the positional variation of the multiple vertical edges with predetermined patterns.

  • Publication number: 20130044218
Abstract: The device for monitoring surroundings of a vehicle is provided with means for detecting objects in the surroundings of the vehicle based on image acquired by an imaging device, display devices for displaying on display screens display images that are produced based on the captured image, and alerting means for alerting a driver of the existence of an object through the display devices when an object is detected. The display devices are placed at a plurality of locations visible from the driver. The alerting means reduces volume of information to be displayed on the display screen of the display device that requires large movement of line of sight of the drive for the driver to recognize the display screen from the reference line of sight that looks straight ahead.

  • Publication number: 20130004021
Abstract: An imaging means mounted on a vehicle performs imaging resulting in grayscale images having brightness values corresponding to object temperature, and objects around the vehicle are detected from said images. On the basis of said grayscale images, display images to be displayed on a display device mounted on the vehicle are generated and displayed on the display device. The display images are generated by lowering the brightness of areas not corresponding to the objects detected in the grayscale images. The display device is positioned in the vehicle width direction at no more than a prescribed distance away from an imaginary line passing through the center of rotation of the vehicle steering wheel and extending in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. Accordingly, because display images are generated in which only the objects are spotlighted, the driver can quickly comprehend the objects present when using a display device.

  • Publication number: 20120320212
Abstract: A surrounding area of a vehicle is imaged, and target objects in the area are detected based on captured images. A driver is warned of the presence of the detected target objects by displaying a warning indication on the displayed image. If a total number of simultaneously detected target objects is equal to or less than a specified number, the warning indication of a first display mode is applied in which each target object is emphasized individually. If the total number is more than the specified number, the warning indication of a second warning display mode is applied in which one emphasized indication predefined is displayed for the whole displayed image without displaying the warning indication of the first display mode. The warning image becomes easier to understand for a driver, compared to an image where all detected objects are always emphasized individually regardless of the total number of them.

  • Publication number: 20120314074
Abstract: A surrounding area monitoring apparatus, which is built into a vehicle, images the area surrounding the vehicle and detects physical objects in the area surrounding the vehicle based on the image taken. The apparatus determines whether the detected physical object is a pedestrian or an animal, and a warning is given to the driver of the vehicle if the determined physical object is present within a specified area from the vehicle. If it is determined that the detected physical object is an animal and that the animal is present within the specified area, the warning in continued for a specified period even after the animal has left the specified area. Since animals have habits of behaving in a herd, risk of lurking animals can be brought to the driver's attention by the continuation of the warning.

  • Publication number: 20120281878
Abstract: In a target-object distance measuring device and a vehicle on which the device is mounted, a human body detection device is utilized for calculating a distance between an image capturing device and a human body candidate in an actual space based on the size of the human body candidate in the image. The head width is approximately 15-16 cm. A body height in the actual space of the human candidate in the image is estimated based on the ratio between the head-width in the extracted image and at least one size of the human body feature, such as total height, in the extracted human body candidate region, and the distance from the image capturing device to the human body candidate in the actual space is calculated based on the estimated body height in the actual space and the body height of the human body candidate in the image.

  • Patent number: 8284253
Abstract: Provided is an apparatus capable of, even when an object is moving, measuring the position of the object at a high accuracy. According to a vehicle periphery monitoring apparatus (10), an enlargement factor relevant to when the degree of correlation between an enlarged local region (EB(?i)) obtained by enlarging a local region (B(k?1)) at a previous time (k?1) and a local region (B(k)) at a time (k) later than the previous time (k?1) becomes the maximum is calculated as a change rate (Rate(k)) of the size of the local region (B(k)). Based on the change rage (Rate(k)), it is possible to measure the distance (Z(k)) from a vehicle (1) to the object or the position (P(k)) at a high accuracy even when the object is moving.

  • Patent number: 8189868
Abstract: A vehicle periphery monitoring device is operable to report a high contact possibility between a vehicle and an object at an appropriate time or frequency according to the type of the object. When the object is determined to be a human being and the position of the object in real space is contained in a first contact determination area, a high contact possibility between the vehicle and the object is reported. On the other hand, when the object is determined to be a quadruped animal and the real spatial position of the object is contained in a second contact determination area, the corresponding report is made. The second contact determination area has an overlapped area that overlaps with the first contact determination area, and an overflowed area that has at least a part thereof overflowing from the first contact determination area.

  • Patent number: 8174578
Abstract: A vehicle periphery monitoring device is operable to recognize with high accuracy whether or not an object is a designated quadruped animal. According to the vehicle periphery monitoring device, for determining whether or not a first object region and a second object region correspond to the designated quadruped animal according to whether or not the aspect ratio of the first object region is equal to or greater 1, a plurality of the second object regions are extracted, and it is determined whether the ratio of the vertical dimension of the second object region to the vertical dimension of the first object region lies within the range of the ratio of the leg vertical dimension to the torso vertical dimension of a common designated quadruped animal.

  • Publication number: 20120044352
Abstract: Provided is a vehicle periphery monitoring device capable of making a driver reliably recognize the shape of an object to which attention should be paid. According to an image processing unit (1) (vehicle periphery monitoring device), for example, when it is highly probable that the shape of the object is difficult to be visually recognized through the output image because of the reason that the object is present far from the vehicle or other reason, an enlarged image (Q?) of the object (Q) is displayed on an HUD (7) so as not to overlap with the object (Q).

  • Publication number: 20110234804
Abstract: Bicycles present before a vehicle are identified. A picked-up image having intensity values that are in accordance with the temperatures of objects is acquired to extract image regions having intensity values representative of higher temperatures than a background. An object, which includes a pair of first object portions (legs) and a second object portion (a tire), would be identified as a bicycle if the pair of first object portions, which have greater dimensions in length in the vertical direction than in width in the horizontal direction and the distance between which is less than a predetermined value in the horizontal direction, are detected from the extracted image regions and further if the second object portion, which has a different intensity value from any one of the first object portions and also has a length greater than a predetermined value in the vertical direction, is existent between the pair of first object portions.

  • Patent number: 7957556
Abstract: An object such as a person is extracted from images captured by cameras (2R, 2L) to determine the degree of vertical symmetry of the object (step 33). In the case where the degree of vertical symmetry is determined to be high, the object is determined to be other than a living body (step 33a). In the case where the degree of vertical symmetry is determined to be low, the object is determined likely to be a living body (step 33b). In the case where determined likely to be a living body, the object is further determined to be a predetermined kind of living body (for example, a person) or not based on the image of the object (steps 34 and 35). This allows an extremely reliable and simple determination of whether the type of the object extracted from the image captured by the camera is a living body such as a person.
