Abstract: The present invention relates to 5-benzylhexanol-2 and a perfume composition comprising the same. The perfume composition according to the present invention has a floral scent, high stability and, in the mixture system of a product, excellent scent lasting property.

Abstract: A polysaccharide derivative prepared by replacing all or part of the hydroxyl hydrogen atoms of a polysaccharide or polysaccharide derivative by (A) a hydrophobic substituent having a C.sub.8 -C.sub.43 hydrocarbon chain as the partial structure and (B) an ionic hydrophilic substituent having at least one member selected from the group consisting of sulfonic, carboxyl phosphoric, and sulfate groups and salts thereof as the partial structure, wherein the average degree of replacement by the substituent (A) is 0.0001 or above but below 0.001 per constituent monosaccharide residue as determined by Zeisel's method or the diazomethane method and that by the substituent (B) is 0.01 to 2.0 per constituent monosaccharide residue as determined by colloidal titration. This polysaccharide derivative is useful as the admixture for hydraulic materials and can give stable hydraulic compositions excellent in dispersion.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a perfume base composition comprising a carrier and a benzyl-substituted cyclohexanol having formula (1), wherein the dashed line denotes an optional double bond and the benzyl group is in the 2-, 3- or 4-position of the cyclohexanol ring, with the proviso that the benzyl group is in the 4-position when a double bond is present in the cyclohexanol ring. The composition has not only a well-balanced fragrance but also excellent retentivity of fragrance.

Abstract: To provide a simple process for economically preparing a dihydropyrane compound at a high productivity and a high reaction yield.To use a compound selected from the group consisting of a base and a compound (VIII) having a weaker coordination power to the Lewis acid than the aldehyde compound and having an activity to dissolve the Lewis acid, coordinated by the compound (VIII), in a solvent as a co-catalyst in reacting aldehyde with a diene compound in the presence of a Lewis acid to prepare a 5,6-dihydro-2H-pyrane compound represented by formula (III): ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, aryl group which may be substituted with alkyl group, having 6 to 12 total carbon atoms; R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
