After a read resolution and a read density are initialized, an operation goes to a stand-by state, and when an original is detected, a character string “DOCUMENT READY” is displayed on the display unit. Next, when a resolution key is depressed, a character string “STANDARD” as a default of the read resolution is displayed on the display unit without renewing the operation mode. Next, when the resolution key is again depressed, the operation mode is renewed and a character string “FINE” is displayed on the display unit. If the resolution key is again depressed thereafter, the operation mode is again renewed and a character string “PHOTO” is displayed on the display unit.
