  • Patent number: 6143817
Abstract: This invention relates to a stabilized aqueous emulsion polymerization composition comprising (a) from about 10% to about 80% by weight of a polymer derived from an emulsion polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer; (b) from about 0.1% to about 10% by weight of a polyamino acid heteropolymer; (c) from about 0.01% to about 1% by weight of a free radical polymerization initiating agent; and (d) the remainder water. The polyamino acid heteropolymer in (b) may be selected from the group consisting of polyaspartic acid heteropolymers, polyglutamic acid heteropolymers, copolymers of polyaspartic acid heteropolymers with polyglutamic acid heteropolymers, and mixtures thereof. The present invention also pertains to a method for emulsifying and stabilizing an aqueous free radical emulsion polymerization reaction employing the polyamino acid heteropolymers.
