Abstract: A user is allocated a first period of limited free access to content; the user's activity during the first period is monitored; and the user is assigned to a particular cohort based on the user's activity during the first period. Each cohort prescribes one or more conditions governing additional free access by users assigned to that cohort. The user is allocated a usage allowance based on the conditions prescribed in the cohort to which the user was assigned; and the user's actual usage is enforced according to the conditions prescribed in that cohort. After a time period prescribed by that cohort, the user is given an opportunity to become a subscriber to the system. If the user does not become a subscriber then the user's usage allowance is adjusted based on conditions prescribed in that cohort.
