Publication number: 20080019801Abstract: A device for backing rounded book blocks (2) clamped near the spine, by a pressing beam (9) and a slide (7) that accommodates the pressing beam (9) and can be alternately displaced along arc-shaped races (6) in a swinging fashion by driving means (17) in a height-adjustable supporting bearing (5) that is laterally supported against the effect of a spring element (29). Members are provided for controlling (21, 22, 32, 33) the lateral position of the supporting bearing (5) and for lowering and raising (10, 11, 12) the pressing beam into the starting position for its return stroke. An eccentric starting position is realized during the lowering of the pressing beam (9) on the spine (2a), in the form of a swinging position of the slide (7) that is offset toward the opposite side of the spine center (2b) referred to the respective side to be backed thereafter.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 23, 2007Publication date: January 24, 2008Inventors: Manfred Albrecht, Torsten Meineke

Publication number: 20070042229Abstract: An apparatus and method is disclosed for orienting the magnetic anisotropy of longitudinal patterned magnetic recording media. A disk-shaped longitudinal granular magnetic recording medium is provided having a high orientation ratio in the circumferential direction. The medium is then patterned to form a uniform array of magnetic islands. The magnetic islands are then irradiated with ions to increase the magnetic exchange coupling between the grains of each island. This aligns the axes of magnetic anisotropy of the individual grains with the average axis of magnetic anisotropy of the grains, thereby aligning the magnetic anisotropy of each island along the circumferential direction.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 22, 2005Publication date: February 22, 2007Inventors: Manfred Albrecht, Andreas Moser, Natacha Supper, Bruce Terris

Publication number: 20070031212Abstract: The device comprises a delivery device (4-9) that delivers the additional part (2) into a delivery position (10) that is spaced apart from the book block spine (11a). The transfer device (13) comprises at least two holding elements (14a, b) that move in a reciprocating fashion and the cycles of which are phase-shifted relative to one another, wherein said holding elements move in different tracks (15a, b) that are offset relative to one another between the delivery position (10) and the book block spine (11a) and apply the delivered additional part (2) onto the book block spine (11a) after it was provided with glue. The holding elements (14a, b) carry out a reciprocating turning movement about a common axis (16), wherein the turning radius of at least one holding element is increased or decreased in the instant in which both holding elements (14a, b) pass one another.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 22, 2006Publication date: February 8, 2007Inventor: Manfred Albrecht

Patent number: 6947235Abstract: A patterned perpendicular magnetic recording medium has magnetic islands that contain stacks of individual magnetic cells to provide multilevel recording. Each cell in an island is formed of a material or set of materials to provide the cell with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and is a single magnetic domain. Each cell is magnetically decoupled from the other cells in its island by nonmagnetic spacer layers. Thus each cell can have a magnetization (magnetic moment) in one of two directions (into or out of the plane of the layer making up the cell), and this magnetization is independent of the magnetization of the other cells in its island. This permits multiple magnetic levels or states to be recorded in each magnetic island.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 2003Date of Patent: September 20, 2005Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Manfred Albrecht, Olav Hellwig, Guohan Hu, Bruce David Terris

Publication number: 20050170212Abstract: Magnetic medium recording performance can be enhanced by irradiating a magnetic medium with ions having an acceleration voltage of between 10 keV and 100 keV to induce exchange coupling between grains of the magnetic medium. The magnetic medium is exposed to a cumulative ion dosage of between 1013 ions/cm2 and 1017 ions/cm2 using a non-patterned exposure of the magnetic medium. The ions can be selected from the group consisting of H+, He+, Ne+, Ar+, Kr+, and Xe+. Alternatively, the ions can be selected from the group consisting of Ga+, Hg+, and In+.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 29, 2004Publication date: August 4, 2005Applicant: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Manfred Albrecht, Charles Rettner, Bruce Terris, Thomas Thomson

Patent number: 5556244Abstract: The backing of a previously rounded book block is accomplished, while the book block is clamped between oppositely disposed gripping jaws, by subjecting the spine region of the book block to composite forces resulting from imparting a swinging motion along an arcuate path to a pressing beam carrier, to cause the pressing beam to bend the book block sheets outwardly away from the center line of the block, and superimposing tangential sliding motion on the pressing beam as it acts on the book block in the region adjacent the edges of the spine to thereby controllably form creases in the opposite sides of the block.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1995Date of Patent: September 17, 1996Assignee: Kolbus GmbH & Co.
