    Abstract: This invention relates to a polyfunctional isocyanate which is an acrylamide or methacrylamide homopolymer or interpolymer having 20 to 100% of its secondary .alpha. and tertiary .alpha. carbon atom amide groups converted to isocyanate groups, said polyfunctional isocyanate being free of alkali and urea groups.The polyfunctional isocyanates are prepared by reacting the N-chloramide derivative of the acrylamide or methacrylamide polymer, in an inert solvent, with a tertiary amine having a pK.sub.a value of more than 7.The polyfunctional isocyanates are useful for forming coating compositions.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of organic mono- and polyisocyanates is described, in which a hydrogen chloride adduct of a trisubstituted urea is thermally decomposed to form the isocyanate. The hydrogen chloride adduct at minimum contains the stoichiometric amount of HCl, and at maximum a 10 mole-% excess. The process is carried out in a closed system at a temperature between about 80.degree. and 180.degree. C.; the reaction is effected either in a melt or in the presence of an inert organic solvent.

    Abstract: An improved process for the preparation of asymmetrical N-phenyl-N'-substituted para-phenylene diamines by the reductive alkylation of para-nitroso-diphenylhydroxylamine with an aldehyde or a ketone in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst is disclosed. The improvement comprises utilizing as the hydrogenation catalyst (1) one member selected the group consisting of palladium and platinum sulfide, in an amount less than 1%, by weight, based on the weight of para-nitroso-diphenylhydroxylamine, and (2) activated carbon with a specific surface area of at least 700 square meters per gram and an ash content of less than 7.5%, by weight.

The improvement comprises utilizing as the acid catalyst an acid selected from the group consisting of aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, and aromatic sulfonic acids, having a pK.sub.a equal to or less than one, perchloric acid, and trifluoroacetic acid, in an amount equal to or greater than 0.5 mol of acid per mol of nitroso reactants, and performing the reaction at a temperature from about -20.degree. C to about 60.degree. C.

    Abstract: Preparation of N,N'-dichloro-terephthalamide or N,N'-dichloro-isophthalamide by chlorination of an aqueous suspension of the corresponding terephthalamide or isophthalamide under acid conditions in which the dilution of the reaction mixture is sufficient to maintain the hydrogen chloride being produced as a by-product of the chlorination substantially completely dissolved in the reaction mixture up to the end of the reaction. The compound N,N'-dichloro-terephthalamide has been discovered to be a very stable mild oxidizing agent useful as an antiseptic. Both compounds obtained by the disclosed preparation are valuable intermediate compounds.

    Abstract: A two-stage process for producing para-aminobenzoic acid by first reacting certain lower alkyl or glycol monoesters of terephthalic acid or specific salts thereof or mixtures thereof with ammonia in liquid phase at elevated temperatures and pressures to obtain a terephthalic acid monoamide intermediate, removing substantially all ammonia from this intermediate and then converting it into the para-aminobenzoic acid product by the Hofmann reaction, preferably using a sodium hypochlorite solution. The para-aminobenzoic acid, either as the free acid or in the form of its salts or esters is a known product having many uses.
