Abstract: The nutty, bready, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, meat extract or vegetable flavor or aroma of foodstuffs is augmented or enhanced by the use of one or more 2-alkylthioalkyl-4,5-dialkyl-.DELTA..sup.3 -thiazolines having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and are either hydrogen or methyl. These compounds augment or enhance the sweet, meaty, meat extract-like, beef broth-like, hydrolyzed vegetable protein-like, bread crust-like, potato-like, sulfury, roasted, roasted meat, vegetable and tomato aroma nuances, and the bread crust-like, sweet, meat extract-like, beef broth-like, hydrolyzed vegetable protein-like, salty, bloody, metallic, sweet/meaty, potato, vegetable, and cooked tomato flavor nuances of foodstuff flavors.

Abstract: Described are derivatives of 2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octanes and precursors therefor, cyclohexenemethanols as well as organometallic salts of said cyclohexenemethanols. The oxabicyclooctanes are useful in perfumery and foodstuff and medicinal product flavors. The cyclohexenemethanols and their organometallic salts are useful as precursors for the oxabicyclooctanes.

Abstract: Described is the use for augmenting or enhancing the flavor of foodstuffs of a product containing isomers of caryophyllene alcohol and other compounds produced by isomerizing caryophyllene oxide using an aluminum isopropylate catalyst in a toluene solvent at temperatures in the range of from about 100.degree. C. up to about 150.degree. C. and then fractionally distilling the resulting reaction product and isolating certain fractions of the reaction product.

Abstract: Described is a process for preparing .beta.-damascone starting with 2,6,6-trimethyl cyclohex-2-enone according to the reaction sequence: ##STR1## wherein Z is hydrogen, MgX', Li, Na or K; Y is MgX', Li, Na or K; X' is Cl, Br or I; R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 lower alkyl such as methyl, ethyl, n-propyl or i-propyl; X is Cl, Br or I. Also described are the organoleptic uses of the compound having the structure: ##STR2## in augmenting or enhancing the taste or aroma of a consumable material, e.g., foodstuff, chewing gum, medicinal product, chewing tobacco, smoking tobacco, perfume, perfumed article (e.g., drier-added fabric softener articles and solid or liquid anionic, cationic or nonionic detergents) and cologne.

Abstract: Described is a process for augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of a smoking tobacco comprising the step of intimately admixing with smoking tobacco, an organoleptic property augmenting or enhancing quantity of a cyclic chemical compound having a structure selected from the group consisting of: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of hyrogen and methyl; R.sub.2 is C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkyl or alkenyl; and R.sub.5 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 acyl and wherein one of the dashed lines is a carbon-carbon single bond and the other of the dashed lines is a carbon-carbon double bond.

Abstract: Described are derivatives of 2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octanes and precursors therefor, cyclohexenemethanols as well as lower alkyl esters of said cyclohexenemethanols. The oxabicyclooctanes are useful in perfumery and foodstuff, medicinal product and tobacco flavors. The cyclohexenemethanols are useful as precursors for the oxabicyclooctanes and are, themselves, useful for their organoleptic properties in perfumery and flavors as are the esters of said cyclohexenemethanols.

Abstract: Described is a process for augmenting or enhancing the aroma of a solid or liquid anionic, cationic or nonionic detergent comprising the step of intimately admixing with a solid or liquid anionic, cationic or nonionic detergent base, a product prepared by a process comprising the steps of (i) intimately admixing aluminum isopropylate, toluene and a caryophyllene derivative selected from the group consisting of caryophyllene oxide and dihydro caryophyllene oxide to form a mixture; (ii) heating the resulting mixture at a temperature of from 100.degree. C. up to 150.degree. C. for a period of time from about one up to about five hours; and (iii) the rearranged caryophyllene oxide or dihydro caryophyllene oxide, a mixture of alcohols, from the reaction mass; the concentration of aluminum isopropylate catalyst in the reaction mass varying from about 0.025 molar up to about 0.75 molar; and the concentration of caryophyllene oxide or dihydro caryophyllene oxide in the reaction mass varying from about 0.

Abstract: Processes and compositions are described for use in foodstuff flavors and as foodstuff article aroma and taste augmenting and enhancing materials of at least one 2-substituted-4,5-dimethyl.DELTA..sup.3 -thiazolines having the structure: ##STR1## wherein one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 is methyl and each of the other of R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 is hydrogen. The compounds of our invention are useful in augmenting or enhancing the flavor and aroma nuances of vegetable, spice, nutty, chocolate and black pepper flavors.

Abstract: Described is the compound 6-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylheptanal useful in augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of foodstuffs, flavoring compositions for foodstuffs, tobacco compositions, flavoring compositions for tobacco, perfume compositions, ingredients for perfume compositions, perfumed articles and ingredients for perfumed articles as well as a process for preparing 6-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylheptanal comprising the steps of:(i) forming a sulfite addition salt of 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenal by mixing an alkali metal sulfite in boric acid with 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenal and(ii) hydrating the thus formed 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenal sulfite addition salt with a hydrating reagentas well as the intermediate which is the sulfite addition salt of 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenal.

Abstract: Described is a method for augmenting or enhancing the aroma or flavor of a foodstuff comprising adding to the foodstuff from 0.05 up to about 500 parts per million of a mixture of cis-3-hexenal, trans-2-hexenal, cis-3-hexenyl formate, cis-3-hexenol and cis-3-hexenyl-cis-3-hexenoate prepared by the process of reacting cis-3-hexenol with pyridinium chlorochromate.

Abstract: Described are spiropyran derivatives useful in preparing smoking tobacco compositions and flavoring compositions for tobacco having the structure: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or methyl; wherein R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 represents hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 lower alkyl; wherein when one of R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 or R.sub.7 is any of C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 lower alkyl, each of the other of the R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 moieties is hydrogen; wherein each of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon single bond or a carbon-carbon double bond, with at least one of the dashed lines being a carbon-carbon single bond. In tobacco flavoring such compounds give rise to aromatic, sweet, minty and cooling notes.
