  • Patent number: 6262163
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing protective-colloid-stabilized vinyl ester or vinyl ester-ethylene polymers in the form of their aqueous dispersions by emulsion polymerization in the presence of one or more protective colloids, which comprises carrying out the polymerization in the presence of a hydrophobic but silane-free protective colloid based on (meth)acrylate polymers with from 80 to 95% by weight, based on the total weight of the copolymer, of acrylic or methacrylic esters of aliphatic alcohols having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, and from 5 to 20% by weight, based on the total weight of the copolymer, of ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids, and with a glass transition temperature Tg of the copolymer of from 60 to 120° C., and with a Fikentscher K value of the copolymer of from 20 to 50.

  • Patent number: 5124401
Abstract: A finely-divided, monomodal protective-colloid stabilized aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of at least 75% by weight of units of vinyl chloride and ethylene and optionally copolymerized with up to 25% by weight of units of additional monomers unsaturated at the ethylene bond and having a solids content of 45 to 70% by weight, characterized in that the dispersions are not partially flocculated, the polymer has a mean particle size of 150 to 500 nm measured as mean weight in a disc centrifuge and a polydispersion index of not more than 1.8 and less than 50% of the polymer particles are larger than 1,000 nm and a process for the preparation thereof using a single step radical polymerization of vinyl chloride, ethylene and optionally additional monomers such as vinyl esters useful as dispersion powders, adhesives, binders and concrete additives.

  • Patent number: 4859751
Abstract: A novel process for the preparation of a readily dispersible, pourable dispersion powder comprising emulsion polymerizing in the presence of a free radial initiator a mixture of 1 to 50% by weight of ethylene and 99 to 50% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated comonomer phase comprising at least one member of the group consisting of (a) 60 to 100% by weight of vinyl chloride, (b) 0 to 40% by weight of monoethylically unsaturated, oil-soluble monomers, (c) 0 to 10% by weight of monoethylenically unsaturated water-soluble monomers having functional groups and (d) 0 to 5% by weight of oil-soluble monomers that are monoethylenically unsaturated and have functional groups or are multiple ethylenically unsaturated and optionally a protective colloid and/or emulsifier at an ethylene pressure of 10 to 150 bar to obtain an aqueous dispersion of a vinyl chloride-ethyelene copolymer, optionally adding to the aqueous dispersion (e) 0 to 40% by weight, based on the VCE-polymer, of at least one water-soluble substance

  • Patent number: 4528315
Abstract: A process for the preparation of aqueous dispersions, also emulsion (co)polymerization of vinyl halides and/or vinyl esters and, if needed, additional monomers in the absence of emulsifying agents are described. Protective colloid is added after the initiation of the polymerization to stabilize the forming dispersion. The dispersions are characterized by low viscosity, even with high solids contents, and low structural viscosity, and they are suitable a.o. especially for the preparation of redispersible powders.

  • Patent number: 4397968
Abstract: A process for the production of an aqueous dispersion stabilized by a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol and based on copolymers that comprise at least 60% by weight of monomer units selected from the group consisting of esters of acrylic acid, esters of methacrylic acid, styrene, and substituted styrene and mixtures thereof, consisting essentially of subjecting a stabilized dispersion of a monomer mixture containing at least 60% by weight of monomers selected from the group consisting of esters of acrylic acid, esters of methacrylic acid, styrene, substituted styrene and mixtures thereof, said dispersion being an aqueous dispersion stabilized by a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol, to polymerization at a temperature in excess of 60.degree.
