  • Patent number: 5117706
Abstract: A backlash-free drive for the infeed mechanism of a microtome, comprising a threaded spindle (1) mounted so as to be rotatable but axially non-shiftable, as well as two nut elements (2a, 2b) connected such that they are non-rotatable but can be shifted in an axial direction relative one another, said nut elements being spring-loaded against one another in an axial direction. Acceptable tolerances for the conicity of the threaded spindle are obtained by making use of at least one plain bearing (11,13;12,14) between the threaded spindle and nut element (2a), said nut element being connected to a specimen holder (16) via a gear. Fences (30,32;31,33) acting in the direction of spindle rotation protect the thread from deformation, as do two frictional clutches (24;25), which prevent excessive driving torques from having an effect and allow the user the option of operating the micrometer with manual feed (22) or an automatic feed device (26).

  • Patent number: 5099735
Abstract: A microtome knife holder comprises a support element provided on the base connected to a microtome and at least one jaw for clamping the knife that is adjustable along a rail of the support element in the same direction as the cutting edge of the knife and releasably securable on said supporting element at a desired location. The guide means if formed of a prism rail of substantially dovetailed profile, a slotted foot portion of the holder is formed with a matching complementary profile and compressible by means of at least one screw engaging around said prism rail. Different holders, usually for different types of knives, can easily be slid on or off the rail. A quick release clamp and edge guard are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4979376
Abstract: An improve microtomy device is disclosed comprising a microtome and a thermostatically controlled refrigeration means controllable by a microprocessor and accommodated in an instrument cabinet, the improvement comprising, providing an upper part of the instrument cabinet in the form of a movable cover, which cover encloses a slidable transparent pane arranged above the microtome to define an inspection window disposed in a front portion of the cover. The pane is heatable and can be removed from the cover and/or shifted into a rearward portion of the cover to open the inspection window for cleaning purposes. The improved device provides convenient accessibility to the interior of the instrument and improved control of operations.
