  • Patent number: 6315543
Abstract: An injection molding machine includes various devices for reducing injection cycle time. A molded article detection apparatus and method are disclosed. The detection system and method determines if an article, or a portion thereof, remains on a machine core pin after the article ejection cycle has occurred, and, if so, communicates this condition to both the machine controller and the take-out controller. This prevents the machine from starting a new cycle and damaging the injection mold. Also, by communicating the extraction status to both the take-out controller and machine controller, if no articles or portions remain, injection cycle time is reduced. Additionally, a variable vacuum pressure apparatus and method are described. The apparatus and method allows early removal of molded articles from the molds into a take-out plate while the parts are still warm.

  • Patent number: 6056536
Abstract: A valve gating apparatus and method for injection molding includes at least one shutter disposed between the gate and the cavity melt channel into a mold cavity. The shutter is moved laterally, between a closed position wherein flow of melt from the nozzle into the cavity is inhibited, and an open position wherein flow of melt into the cavity is unimpeded by the shutter. Intermediate these two positions, the shutter can be employed to reduce the cross sectional area of the gate to throttle the gate. Embodiments are disclosed wherein one shutter or pairs of shutters are employed to gate the gate. Further, when pairs of shutters are employed, the shutters can abut each other in the close position or can overlie each other. This novel design prevents generation of waste material and eliminates the need to have devices for removing cold plugs.

  • Patent number: 6048476
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and a system for preventing mold flash. The method broadly comprises the steps of: introducing a fluid under pressure into a mechanism for applying a clamping force such as the clamping cylinder of a piston-cylinder unit; increasing the pressure of the fluid in the clamping force applying mechanism so as to apply a clamping force to the mold; injecting moldable material into the mold; measuring actual pressure in the clamping force applying mechanism; and determining whether the mold is close to blowing open when the moldable material is injected into the mold using the actual measured pressure in the clamping cylinder.
