  • Patent number: 4997883
Abstract: An impact resistance modifier for polycarbonate, which is a copolymer, comprising an elastomer and a methyl methacrylate copolymer, which are bonded covalently. The methyl methacrylate copolymer is one that is compatible by itself with polycarbonate resin due to specific comonomers. Such comonomers are aromatic (meth)acrylic esters and (meth)acrylamides, cycloalkyl(meth)acrylamides and cycloalkylmaleimides. Thermoplastic molding compounds comprising polycarbonate and the new impact resistance modifier exhibit excellent impact resistance.

  • Patent number: 4521567
Abstract: A method for making impact resistant molding compositions wherein a hard phase having a glass transition temperature above 25.degree. C. and consisting principally of methyl methacrylate is polymerized at least partially in a first stage, following which the monomers of a rubbery phase whose polymers have a glass transition temperature below 25.degree. C. are added in a second stage and the polymerization is carried to completion, polymerization of the hard phase in the first stage being performed in a presence of an oil soluble free radical initiator and of an organosulfur chain transfer agent having at least two thiol groups in the molecule, and polymerization of the monomers of the rubbery phase in the second stage being carried out with graft crosslinkers in the presence of the previously formed hard phase.

  • Patent number: 4507444
Abstract: A process of making radically polymerizable compositions suitable for the production of impact resistant optically clear glass like plastic and forming the glass from such compositions is disclosed. Also taught are the polymerizable compositions and the final glass produced. An isocyanate terminated prepolymer based upon a polyol selected from polyesters, polyester amides, polycarbonates and polyacetals and diisocyanates selected from branched aliphatic isocyanates, cycloaliphatic isocyanates and aliphatic or cycloaliphatic isocyanates graft polymerized with vinyl monomers is chain extended with aliphatic or cyloaliphatic diamines while in solution in vinyl monomers consisting mainly of methacrylic acid esters. The chain extension is carried out with a deficit of amine and preferably to a viscosity at 20% solids in the vinyl monomers of between 200 and 30,000 cP at 20.degree. C. The composition is then radically polymerized to form the high impact glass like plastic alloy.
