Also disclosed is an oral pharmaceutical composition in unit dosage form for oral administration for the prevention or treatment of high serum levels of cholesterol and/or lipids in a mammal, said composition comprising an effective amount of natural lycopene to prevent or treat high serum levels of cholesterol or lipid in a mammal and in a sufficient amount to achieve a level of serum cholesterol of less than 200 mg per deciliter over the course of treatment, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier therefor.
