Abstract: A device for applying a liquid to pasty medium to a moving surface, the moving surface in the case of direct application being the surface of a paper, board or other fibrous web. In the case of indirect application the moving surface being the surface of a transfer element which transfers the application medium to the surface of the fibrous web. The device includes an applicator for applying the medium and a doctor device arranged downstream in the running direction of the moving surface for doctoring off and/or equalizing the medium applied to the moving surface. In order to collect excess medium that has not remained on the moving surface and/or has not reached the latter, a flexible collecting part covering the interspace between applicator and doctor device is provided, which extends transversely with respect to the running direction of the moving surface and parallel to the applicator and the doctor device.

Abstract: An applicator for direct or indirect application of a liquid or pasty coating medium onto a traveling material web includes a metering system with a metering slot configured as a nozzle and formed between an approach-side lip and a departure-side lip. The applicator also includes, disposed opposite the nozzle, a traveling countersurface on which the coating medium issuing out of the metering slot is to be applied. The exit of the metering slot is followed by a transfer blade for the coating medium, arranged on the approach-side lip. The transfer blade has its length, with respect to the countersurface, selected such that the transfer blade in its operating position contacts the countersurface. The transfer blade passes the coating medium along its departure-side surface from the exit of the metering slot onto the countersurface.

Abstract: An application unit for directly or indirectly applying a fluid or pasty medium to a continuous material web, particularly made of paper or cardboard, includes a support beam extending in its longitudinal direction substantially across the entire width of the material web; a counter-roll opposite the support beam; a doctor element detachably secured to the support beam via a holding device and extending substantially across the entire width of the counter-roll; and a pressing member disposed on the support beam and to which a pressing force is directly and/or indirectly applied by at least one pressing device and with which the doctor element can be pressed against the counter-roll at a predetermined pressure in the region of its blade-element end mated with the counter-roll. When viewed in cross section, the pressing member is formed as a parallelogram body supported at one end in or on at least one mount and running substantially parallel to the doctor element.

Abstract: An application unit for applying a liquid or pasty medium onto a surface moving past the application unit. This has particular application to direct or indirect application of such a medium to a paper or board web. A support beam and a front wall supported generally further from and a rear wall supported generally closer to the moving surface. The walls are spaced apart for defining a pasty medium supply gap between them and are oriented so that the supply gap generally directs the medium toward the surface. The front and rear walls can selectively receive releasable attachment of members for forming a liquid medium an application chamber, the chamber having a downstream end with a blade, an upstream end with a damming strip over which the excessive medium in the application chamber can overflow. Alternatively, a second set of attachable members may be attached to the walls for forming a free jet nozzle dosing gap that communicates with the supply gap for directing the medium to the surface.

Abstract: The invention is directed to an applicator for coating a traveling fiber web with a coating mixture. The applicator includes a backing roll having a shell surface for carrying the web, and a nozzle for feeding the coating mixture. The applicator includes a support beam; a nozzle which is integral with or connected to the support beam; and a doctor bar carried by the support beam. The doctor bar has a guide surface. The guide surface and the backing roll define a nip for producing a hydrodynamic pressure. The guide surface approaching the shell surface of the backing roll extends to an exit edge at a location nearest the backing roll. A device is provided for flexibly backing the doctor bar on the support beam.
