  • Patent number: 5421196
Abstract: A method for monitoring a report of misfires in an internal combustion engine through at least two different submethods includes forming one subgroup from at least two submethods. A weighting graph containing weighting values dependent on operating parameters of a vehicle is assigned to each submethod, and the values are a measure of reliability of a report of the submethod. A weighting value is read out of the associated weighting graph upon each report in a submethod. The weighting values of the submethods of one subgroup are added to make a reference value. The reference value is compared with a limit value, and a misfire report is confirmed if the reference value is greater than the limit value.

  • Patent number: 5394742
Abstract: The speed for each cylinder is determined by means of two crankshaft positions z1, z2. The crankshaft positions z1, z2 are optimized in terms of the case of abnormal combustion. Abnormal combustion is recognized when, according to the selected definition of the speed difference .DELTA.T, a limit value GW is not reached or is exceeded.

  • Patent number: 5386723
Abstract: In a device for detecting faulty firing in an internal-combustion engine, a combustion-chamber pressure is measured at two crankshaft positions before and after each top dead center for each cylinder. At an ignition top dead center, a pressure differential must be greater than a first limiting value for there to be proper firing. At a charge-change top dead center, the pressure differential must be less than a second limiting value for the pressure measurement to be operating properly.

  • Patent number: 5377536
Abstract: A method for identifying misfiring is employed in an internal combustion engine with multiple cylinders. The identification is effected by measuring segment times required for the crankshaft to rotate about given angular segments during the cylinder work cycle. Any fluctuations are then calculated and compared with threshold values. During thrust cutoff, i.e. when no fuel is supplied to the cylinders, errors in the segment time measurement are identified and corrected, and in dependence of the number of the completed cycles for calculating the correction factors, the threshold values are modified.

  • Patent number: 5377535
Abstract: A method for identifying and correcting errors in time measurement on rotating shafts, particularly on crankshafts or shafts connected thereto in internal combustion engines, whereby the shafts are provided with marks which are scanned with sensors. The segment times required by the shaft to rotate about a defined angular distance are measured and compared with a reference segment.

  • Patent number: 5301649
Abstract: An ignition device for internal combustion engines includes an ignition coil with separate primary and secondary windings. A sensor is connected in a spark plug current circuit. A peak value of an ignition current for each ignition is stored in a peak value rectifier and is subsequently processed into a value of a closing duration of the primary circuit, which is maintained at a constant by a control value regulation, to compensate for deviations and soiling or age condition changes in the ignition circuit. The closing duration is ascertained cylinder-selectively below an engine rpm limit value, is ascertained above this limit value only for a predetermined cylinder and is used for all of the remaining cylinders.

  • Patent number: 5140850
Abstract: A process for determining an available combustion air mass for a certain combustion in one or more cylinders of an internal combustion engine, includes continuously measuring an aspirated air mass through air mass measurement in an intake tube, and correcting the measured air mass so that it corresponds to a combustion air mass. A pressure in each cylinder is measured through a combustion chamber pressure measurement. A combustion air mass is determined for each cylinder from a pressure course during a compression stroke. Any difference between the combustion air masses ascertained through the air mass measurement and through the combustion chamber pressure measurement is compensated for by adaptation of the correction.

  • Patent number: 5020498
Abstract: In a fuel injection apparatus having an injection nozzle opening at predetermined pressure, to which fuel is deliverable under pressure, the injection nozzle chamber communicates with a fuel supply line with the interposition of a check valve closing outward; the pressure in the fuel supply line is lower than the opening pressure of the injection nozzle. Furthermore, the injection nozzle chamber communicates with a work chamber of a spring-loaded work piston, the displacement motion of which for increasing the pressure in the nozzle chamber above the opening pressure of the injection nozzle is effected by relieving a second work chamber of the spring-loaded work piston under the influence of spring force.
