    Abstract: A method for dewatering mineral slurries employing a copolymer of diallyldimethlylammonium halide and a vinyl alkoxysilane, which is preferably a copolymer of diallyldimethylammonium chloride and vinyltrimethoxysilane as a coagulant is disclosed. The method for dewatering mineral slurries containing water comprising the steps of: feeding said mineral slurry into a thickener, treating said mineral slurry with an effective amount of a coagulant which comprises a copolymer of halide and a vinyl alkoxysilane; allowing the water to separate from the mineral slurry, withdrawing the water from said thickener and discharging said mineral products from said thickener. Mineral slurries which can be effectively treated are copper and taconite. The above-mentioned method may also include treatment with a flocculant in conjunction with the coagulant.

The improvement comprises using as a polymeric dispersion stabilizer a water soluble hydrophobically associating copolymer of diallyldimethylammonium chloride and a monomer selected from the group consisting of: ##STR1## and alkyl esters of acrylic acid, where R.sub.1 is either hydrogen or CH.sub.3 ; R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms; A.sub.1 is either an oxygen atom or NH; B.sub.1 is either an alkylene group having 2 to 4 carbon atoms or a hydroxypropylene group, Q is benzyl, or C.sub.6 -C.sub.20 alkyl, and X.sub.1.sup.- is an anionic counterion.

    Abstract: A method of removing waste oil from industrial oily waste water is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of adding to the oily waste water which includes oil, dispersed solids and emulsified water, an effective amount of a demulsifier which comprises a copolymer of a cationic monomer and a vinyl alkoxysilane; allowing the oil, emulsified water and dispersed solids to flocculate and separate into layers; and then removing the water layer from the treated waste water. The cationic monomer is selected from the group consisting diallyldimethylammonium halide, dimethylaminoethyl acrylate quaternary salt and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate quaternary salt.

The method comprises the steps of adding to a process stream a sulfide scavenger (probe) that changes electronic properties when it reacts with sulfide. One can then monitor the electronic properties of the sulfide scavenger in the process stream to determine the concentration of sulfide present. In a preferred embodiment, the sulfide scavenger is either fluorescent and when it reacts with sulfide becomes inactive or is inactive and when it reacts with sulfide becomes fluorescent.
