    Abstract: The present invention relates to the isolation and identification of nucleic acid sequences encoding the coat protein of papaya ringspot virus in the Kapoho (KA), Keaau (KE), Thailand (TH), Brazil (BR), Jamaica (JA), Mexico (ME), Venezuela (VE), and Oahu (OA) strains, and the uses thereof to impart viral resistance to papaya plants. The present invention also relates to nucleic acid constructs containing individual or multiple papaya ringspot virus coat protein-encoding nucleic acid sequences, and host cells and transgenic plants and seeds containing such constructs. The present invention is also directed to a method of using such constructs to impart to plants resistance to papaya ringspot virus.
