Patent number: 10793760Abstract: A method and composition for modifying bentonite to allow the bentonite to be useful in drilling mud applications. The method includes the steps of: preparing bentonite local to Saudi Arabia using raw water to remove contaminants from the bentonite; grinding the bentonite to a fine powder; sieving the fine powder to be between about 50 ?m and about 150 ?m in particle size to produce a sieved fine powder; mixing the sieved fine powder with polyanionic cellulose polymer to produce a modified bentonite composition; adding the modified bentonite composition to water until a homogeneous solution of modified bentonite in water is formed; and allowing the homogeneous solution of modified bentonite in water to rest for about 16 hours to form a composition useful in drilling mud applications.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2018Date of Patent: October 6, 2020Assignee: SAUDI ARABIAN OIL COMPANYInventors: Mansour A. Al-Shafei, Akram A. Alfliow, Awad M. Al-Mofleh, Jamal M. Al-Aamri, Syed Rehan Ahmad Zaidi, Amer A. Al-Tuwailib

Publication number: 20200248319Abstract: A cathodic protection system includes a vessel for containing a fluid or a mixture of fluids, a plurality of anodes positioned inside the vessel, an encapsulant encapsulating the plurality of anodes, the encapsulant being a wax repellant material that is sufficiently porous to allow ions to pass therethrough, and an impressed current source electrically connected to each of the anodes and the vessel. The impressed current source produces a continuous high current output, and the vessel acts as a cathode when current is applied from the impressed current source. The anodes are monitored and controlled from outside of the vessel using one or more adjustable resistors, which are installed in a junction box located either inside or outside the vessel. The resistors are configured to adjust the individual anode current output based upon a predetermined cathodic protection criteria.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 4, 2019Publication date: August 6, 2020Inventors: Husain Al-Mahrous, Mansour A. Al-Shafei, Hassan A. Al-Ajwad, Anaam Hassan Al-ShaikhAli, Ali Abdullah Al Jabran

Patent number: 10301216Abstract: Spent Claus catalyst having a high alumina content is used as an ingredient in the manufacture of Portland cements in place of all or a portion of a conventional source of alumina. The spent Claus catalyst is preferably of a small particle size and can be ground to the desired fineness before mixing with the other ingredients that are heated in a conventional kiln to produce the cement composition. Finely ground spent Claus catalyst can also be used as an additive at levels of 0.1% to 2% by weight to increase the thickening time of shallow casing cement slurries.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2012Date of Patent: May 28, 2019Assignee: Saudi Arabian Oil CompanyInventor: Mansour A. Patent number: 9499915Abstract: Embodiments of a system and method for providing cathodic protection to a vessel include encapsulating a dimensionally stable anode with a wax-repellant cementitious coating. The anode, with the encapsulant, is inserted into a structure to be protected, such as a vessel for handling wet crude. A power supply is connected to the anode and to the vessel, making the vessel a cathode. When power is applied, ions flow from the anode, through the encapsulant and fluids in the vessel, to the vessel structure. The encapsulant prevents paraffin wax from building up on the anode.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2014Date of Patent: November 22, 2016Assignee: Saudi Arabian Oil CompanyInventors: Husain M.
