  • Publication number: 20160177959
Abstract: Fracture-resistant and self-lubricating wear surfaces are provided. In an implementation, a machine surface that is subject to wear is coated with or is constructed of a metallic nanostructure to resist the wear and to provide fracture-resistant hardness, built-in lubrication, and thermal conductivity for heat-sinking friction. The metallic nanostructured surface may be used, for example, on a face seal, bushing, bearing, thrust member, or hydraulic flow passage of an electric submersible pump. In an implementation, the metallic nanostructured surface is a nanocrystalline alloy including nanograin twins of a body-centered cubic (BCC), face-centered cubic (FCC), or hexagonal closest packed (HCP) metal. The nanostructured alloy may include atoms of copper, silver, gold, iron, nickel, palladium, platinum, rhodium, beryllium, magnesium, titanium, zirconium, or cobalt, and may provide more hardness and lubricity than diamond-like carbon coatings or carbides.

  • Patent number: 9309742
Abstract: A technique facilitates use of frangible components. The frangible components may comprise components of a gripping tool, e.g. anchor, used in a variety of applications, including well related applications. The tool is provided with a plurality of gripping members which each comprise a frangible structure. The gripping members may be selectively deployed to provide the desired gripping within a tubular structure, e.g. an open wellbore or well casing. The frangible structure in each gripping member is designed to break down into smaller portions after being exposed to a predetermined input, thus facilitating removal of the tool from the tubular structure.

  • Publication number: 20150369003
Abstract: An element is deployed within tubing extending to a downhole tool. The downhole tool includes a hydraulic tool and a valve coupled between the conveyance string and the hydraulic tool. The valve includes a valve seat having a passage directing the fluid from the conveyance string to the hydraulic tool. Deploying the element includes landing the element on the valve seat such that the element substantially obstructs flow of the fluid through the valve seat passage. The valve is opened to direct the flow of the fluid around the hydraulic tool, wherein opening the valve utilizes pressure generated in response to the element obstructing the flow of the fluid through the valve seat passage. At least a portion of at least one of the element and the valve seat is then degraded by an amount sufficient to permit the element to pass through the valve seat passage.
