  • Patent number: 10377729
Abstract: The design and synthesis of a novel bis-furan scaffold tailored for high efficiency at inhibiting transthyretin amyloid formation is reported. In vitro results show that the discovered compounds are more efficient inhibitors of amyloid formation than tafamidis, a drug currently used in the treatment of familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP), despite their lower molecular weight and lipophilicity. Moreover, ex vivo experiments with the strongest inhibitor in the series, conducted in human blood plasma from normal and FAP Val30Met-transthyretin carriers, disclose remarkable affinity and selectivity profiles. The promises and challenges facing further development of this compound are discussed under the light of increasing evidence implicating transthyretin stability as a key factor not only in transthyretin amyloidoses and several associated co-morbidities, but also in Alzheimer's disease.

  • Patent number: 5527454
Abstract: A trickling filter for treating and purifying wastewater, including a bed of filter media adapted to receive and support aerobic bacteria for reacting with the wastewater, and rotating radial areas for distributing the wastewater over the surface face area of the bed of filter media. Drainage blocks for collecting treated wastewater and reacted air are disposed below the bed of filter media collection channels for collecting air and treated wastewater from the drainage blocks. Air-discharge ducts are connected to the collection channels for discharging the reacted air to a scrubber, and water-discharge ducts are connected to the collection channels for discharging the treated wastewater from the filter. Fans create a negative air-pressure flow through the filter media collection channels, vent pipes, and the air-discharge ducts to draw the reacted air to a scrubber for filtering the reacted air.

  • Patent number: 4899210
Abstract: A heat sink adapted for use with VLSI and other integrated circuit elements which includes a base adapted to be in thermal contact with the element to be cooled, there preferably being at least one projection from the side of the base adapted to be adjacent to the element, and a plurality of pins extending from the other side of the base in a direction substantially perpendicular thereto. The projection from the base may either be in the form of a center pedestal which is secured to the element to be cooled by a suitable adhesive, limiting the thermal stress area, or may be a plurality of projections formed in a predetermined pattern which are adapted to be in physical contact with the element and to provide a controlled standoff therefrom which defines a uniform adhesive bond line. The heat sink also preferably provides a means for reducing the temperature gradient between the center pins and peripheral pins which results from the center of the integrated circuit typically being hotter than the outer areas.
