  • Publication number: 20070203319
Abstract: A process of forming a polyol includes the step of providing an initiator composition. The initiator composition includes sucrose as a first initiator and glycerin as a second initiator. The process also includes the steps of providing a dimethylalkanolamine and providing an alkylene oxide. The process further includes the step of reacting the initiator composition, the dimethylalkanolamine, and the alkylene oxide at a pressure of at least 60 psig to form the polyol. After formation, the polyol is utilized in a process of forming a polyurethane article. The process of forming the polyurethane article includes the steps of providing an isocyanate component and providing the polyol. The process of forming the polyurethane articles also includes the step of reacting the isocyanate component and the polyol to form the polyurethane article. The polyurethane article includes the reaction product of the isocyanate component and the polyol.

  • Publication number: 20070199976
Abstract: A process of forming a polyol includes the steps of providing an alkylene oxide, providing an initiator composition having an average functionality of at least four, and providing an alkaline earth metal hydroxide and an amine. The process also includes the step of reacting the initiator composition and the alkylene oxide in the presence of the alkaline earth metal hydroxide and the amine to form the polyol. This allows the polyol to have consistent chain length and be formed with increased speed and in high yield, while reducing costs and maximizing efficiency. The polyol is reacted with an isocyanate and used to form a polyurethane article.

  • Patent number: 7148288
Abstract: A process is disclosed for formation of a preformed stabilizer for use in formation of graft polyols. The preformed stabilizer has a reduced level of transesterification products and results in less reactor fouling. The preformed stabilizer is prepared in the presence of phosphorous compounds, which reduces the unwanted transesterification products.

  • Patent number: 6780932
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for preparation of final graft polyols via a continuous process. In, addition, a final graft polyol formed by the process is disclosed. The process includes the steps of reacting a plurality of ethylenically unsaturated monomers and a reaction moderator with a macromer having induced unsaturation in the presence of a carrier polyol, a free radical polymerization initiator, and a first graft polyol. The process provides for the preparation of a final graft polyol having a solids level of from 30 to 70% in a continuous process. The final graft polyol produced by the process has a lower viscosity over a range of solids levels, a reduced amount of very large irregularly shaped particles, a reduced viscosity change in response to a change in reaction temperature compared to a typical graft polyol, a reduced tendency to foul the continuous reactor, and a broader particle size distribution compared to an identical graft polyol prepared by a semi-batch process.
