    Abstract: A method of manufacturing a portable computing device, involves the steps of (1) maintaining a table comprising stimulus/response data for possible hardware components that may be interfaced in the computing device; (2) performing one manufacturing step in the manufacture of the portable computing device by interfacing one of the possible hardware components with one other component of the computing device; and (3) performing one other manufacturing step in the manufacture by: (i) applying a stimulus to the interfaced hardware component, and reading a response from the interfaced hardware component in response to the applied stimulus; (ii) identifying the interfaced hardware component from a correlation of the response with the stimulus/response data; and (iii) saving the identification as configuration data in the computing device.

    Abstract: A handheld computing device includes a system motherboard; and a display secured to the system motherboard. The display comprises a display panel, and a circuit board carrying display electronics for the display panel. The system motherboard includes a cavity, and the display electronics extend from the circuit board into the cavity. Preferably, the cavity comprises an aperture, and the display electronics are compactly disposed on the circuit board within a common area that is aligned with the aperture.

    Abstract: A method for adjusting a gamma setting of a display for a mobile device is disclosed. The display has two brightness settings, where the two brightness settings include a transmissive mode setting and a reflective mode setting. The method includes: a) changing the display to a selected brightness setting; and b) changing the gamma setting of the display to a predetermined gamma setting corresponding to the selected brightness setting. The predetermined gamma setting optimizes an image on the display at the selected brightness setting. The method also includes switching a back light connected to the display, where the back light is switched to the on position in the transmissive setting and to the off position in the reflective setting.
