  • Patent number: 6518497
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for de-icing aerial cables are provided. The cable is gripped and slowly twisted for a predetermined number of turns within the elastic domain of deformation of the cable. Mechanical elastic energy is therefore accumulated in the cable. The cable is then released and untwisted under the spring back effect, releasing the energy accumulated therein which breaks and shakes off the ice accumulated on the cable.

  • Patent number: 6207939
Abstract: The device and the method are used to de-ice an elongated structural element having a closed contour. The device is formed of pairs of electrically conductive and insulated wires, preformed for winding, one next to the other, along and around the structural element following an helicoidal trajectory while embracing the contour of the structural element with a certain gap. The conductive wires have ends for receiving electromagnetic impulses, and opposite ends electrically connected together. The conductive wires are sized to withstand a current causing a repulsion force whose intensity is capable of breaking the ice or the frost on the structural element by the separation of the conductive wires from each other in response to the repulsion. The conductive wires have rigidity and elasticity properties such that they recover their shape around the structural element after the separation caused by the repulsion.

  • Patent number: 6018152
Abstract: A method and device for removing ice from overhead conductors of a bundle of conductors or preventing an accumulation of ice on these conductors. The method includes forcing the entire current load of the line in one or a portion of the conductors, the excessive power dissipated in this manner de-ices the conductor by Joule heating. The method is repeated for different conductors of the bundle until they have all been de-iced or for the entire duration of an ice storm. Electric power units are provided on each conductor to control the current circulation as needed, and a command module controls the entire system. Conducting elements are provided at the beginning and at the end of the line to allow a distribution of the current as needed.

  • Patent number: 5411121
Abstract: Disclosed is a deicing device for deicing cables. The deicing device includes one pair of conductive wires connected to and helically wound along the cable. The conductive wires are connected at one end to a pulsing device which generates an electromagnetic pulse within the wires, and are connected together at the other end. Upon a passage of the electromagnetic pulse in the wires, a repulsive force is created between the wires, which shakes the wires and shatters the ice that may be attached to the cable.
