A coating is provided on an exterior facing of the cell, preferably within the crimp region, which releases acid and/or other additives. These acids and/or additives are selected to neutralize hydroxide that may evolve from hydrolysis of saliva that occurs if/when the coin cell becomes lodged in the digestive tract.
